The automotive world was turned upside down when Mercedes-Benz unveiled the 300 SL ‘Gullwing’ coupe and 190 SL in prototype form at the New York International Motor Sports Show in February 1954. Both cars had been conceived by American auto importer Max Hoffmann to appeal to the growing appetite for fashionable sports cars in the U.S., and they were designed by Mercedes-Benz only after Hoffmann guaranteed to buy a sufficient number to justify production.
While the Gullwing would figure in the dreams of schoolboys for years to come, it was the less expensive and more practical 190 SL, with its comfortable seats, well-tailored convertible top, and roll-up windows enveloped in lines that echoed those of the Gullwing, that promised something different from the sports cars coming from Europe. Both cars were in production by the end of 1955, and Grace Kelly was driving a silver 190 SL on the movie screen, with Frank Sinatra as her passenger in the movie High Society.
According to the data card on file, this 190 SL was delivered to Capt. Richa of the 7th Army of Wurzburg, Germany, on 18 January 1960. Presumably an officer of the United States Army, Captain Richa ordered the 190 SL through the NATO affiliated dealership. Although delivered to Germany, due to his nationality, this model was originally a Special Version for the U.S., as noted on the data card. Originally delivered in Feurrot (DB 534) with ivory leather upholstery, the 190 SL now presents beautifully in Hellgrun over red leather.
Presented in a beautiful and classic color scheme, this Mercedes-Benz 190 SL is primed and ready for its next owner.

Introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the Mercedes-Benz 300 Sc featured the detuned engine from the 300 SL, including Bosch mechanical fuel injection, and was rumoured to have a true output of around 200 bhp, significantly more than was stated. A further development fitted to the car from the 300 SL was the ‘low-pivot’ swing-axle rear suspension for comfortable touring. Available as a roadster, cabriolet or coupé, it was aimed at celebrities and high-profile individuals. It was hand-built to order with no regard to cost, in order to meet their exacting requirements.
The car offered here is a stunning example of the coupé variant, released from the Mercedes-Benz Sindelfingen factory on 16 March 1956. Its build sheet confirms that this car was built for the 1956 New York International Auto Show, held in its new location at the New York Coliseum. Understandably, it was fitted with a range of desirable options to showcase the level of customisation possible. These options included: a Becker Mexico radio with Reims adaptor, automatic antenna, windshield washer system, sealed beam headlamps with separate parking lamps, whitewall tyres and 1 kg of Nitro paint. A hat box and shoe box were also included.
Originally leaving the factory in Light Blue Metallic (DB 353), with a Red leather interior (1079), the car is currently presented in the striking and period-correct Mercedes-Benz Dark Blue (DB 904), with a Natural leather interior (1068). This beautifully presented 300 Sc previously resided in the stable of a prominent Mercedes-Benz collector in California and was subject to a high-quality full restoration just over 10 years ago. There are also receipts for significant work undertaken in the U.S. during 2016, amounting to almost $40,000 from the Mercedes Classic Center in Irvine, California.

This 300 Sc was featured in Classic Mercedes magazine, and a copy of the feature is on file and accompanies the car. The 300 Sc is among the most desirable of all Mercedes-Benz’s post-war luxury models. It is a rare grand tourer and an exceptional hand-built automobile. This matching-numbers example is a credit to its current and previous custodians.
