The 1970 Pontiac GTO successfully continued the popular GM A-body-derived long hood, short deck body design for a third highly successful year. It also retained the innovative, flexible, body-color Endura nose treatment, which was attractively restyled with twin grille elements and four neatly recessed headlamps. Inside, the standard bucket seats gained a new, breathable, weave upholstery pattern, and both the console and dash panel were covered with wood-grain appliqué, befitting the GTO’s premium road-car stature within the Pontiac model line. The GTO’s renowned handling and road-holding characteristics were upgraded with a new rear anti-sway bar and computer-selected coil springs. Speed-sensitive power steering varied the degree of power assist to ease parking effort while maintaining good road feel at speed, further enhancing the GTO’s prowess.
In all, Pontiac built 40,150 GTOs for 1970, including just 1,302 hardtops powered by the 4-barrel 400/366 HP Ram Air III V-8 engine and TH400 Turbo-Hydramatic 3-speed automatic transmission like this one. Continuing to benefit from a professional restoration completed in 2009, this GTO is a Z-Code car built at the Fremont, California, assembly plant, followed by shipment when new to Bob Longpre Pontiac in Westminster, California. As offered, it carries exceptional integrity with matching numbers including the dash VIN, cowl tag, engine code/VIN, unit number, engine date code, transmission VIN and rear-axle date code.
Finished in a Code 55/55 Baja Gold exterior with Baja Gold trim and a Code 253 Brown bucket seat interior, the GTO befits its premium muscle car stature with a center console, factory air conditioning, Soft Ray window glass and Decor Group 324 options. A renowned driving experience comes with the Ride and Handling package, variable-ratio power steering, power brakes with front discs, and Rally II wheels mounting Goodyear Eagle tires. Factory wheel moldings enhance curb appeal. Other upscale features and options include the Formula three-spoke steering wheel, engine-turned dash trim, the Rally gauge cluster with clock, custom carpets, a remote driver’s side mirror, dual horns and custom front and rear shoulder belts. Accompanied by ownership history from new, this highly equipped GTO includes PHS documents, the Protect-O-Plate, the original sales documents and bill of sale, and maintenance records.
