Completed on May 15, 1957, this multiple-award-winning 1957 Chevrolet Corvette, Serial No. 4007, is the earliest known “Airbox” Corvette and one of only 43 produced. After the completion of a professional restoration by Cincinnati, Ohio, Corvette restorer Joel Lauman in 2007, the car was selected for that year’s Bloomington Gold Special Collection; in 2008, it won the Ault Park Concours d'Elegance Award of Distinction, and in 2010, was inducted into the Bloomington Gold Great Hall as one of the most significant cars in Corvette history. The accolades did not stop there; it has earned multiple NCRS Top Flight Awards and was featured in “The Corvette in the Barn” by noted automotive author Tom Cotter. In 2012, its fascinating story was chronicled in a one-hour Velocity television documentary, “One of a Kind.”
Lauman had long known of the car’s existence, but until he arranged its 2004 sale to his friend Bill Connell, was unaware of its historical significance. Before commencing the car’s restoration, Lauman and Connell asked former GM engineer and fuel-injection expert Ken Kayser to perform a forensic examination, after which Kayser—with a number of other Corvette experts, including Joe Trybulec and Jack Knab—determined that it was in fact the pilot car for the Airbox induction system introduced on 1957 Fuelie Corvettes; Knab later penned a letter of verification to document that finding.
Based on lessons learned at the 1957 season-opening Daytona and Sebring races, the Airbox option package, designated RPO 579D, was provided with the Duntov-cammed, Rochester fuel-injected 283/283 HP V-8. It incorporated a fiberglass intake plenum on the driver’s-side inner fender. Fed by an opening in the radiator bulkhead, it channelled cooler, denser outside air through an internal filter and along a rubberized duct to the Rochester fuel-injection unit for maximum output. This racing-purposed system was available only with the new BorgWarner 4-speed manual transmission (the first 4-speed offered by Chevrolet), a steering-column-mounted AC tachometer driven by cable from a specific Delco 908-series distributor and radio/heater delete, which eliminated the need for ignition shielding beneath the hood and allowed the ignition wires to be more directly routed to the spark plugs.
Because the 43 Airbox Corvettes were almost all destined for competition, they were also built with the RPO 684 Heavy Duty Racing Suspension package. Known simply as the “Big Brake” option, it comprised heavy-duty front coil and five-leaf rear springs, heavy-duty shocks, metallic linings inside finned brake drums, internal fans to draw air in through screened backing plates, a heavy-duty front stabilizer bar, fast steering adapter and “elephant ear” front brake scoops. The same under-hood ducting in the Airbox system was employed to channel cool air to the rear brakes through tunnels in the rocker sills.
Middleton, Ohio, Chevrolet dealer and racer Bill Howe had ordered his Airbox Corvette in January 1957 at a special SCCA event where GM announced the car’s development. After months of waiting, Howe finally flew to the St. Louis plant to take delivery just days before the Cumberland, Maryland, road races. Driving almost directly to Cumberland with just two hours’ rest, Howe drove the car to third place behind Dick Thompson and Carroll Shelby, both driving similarly equipped Corvettes.

Howe raced the Corvette through the remainder of the SCCA season while also contributing to the factory’s development of racing-purposed sintered metallic brake linings scheduled for introduction in 1960. After Howe sold Serial No. 4007, it changed hands a couple times before a friend of Joel Lauman, an Ohio farmer and drag racer, purchased it in the early 1970s with plans to restore it. Three decades later, that honor fell to Lauman, whose persistence and dedication paid off in the discovery and resurrection of this historically important milestone Corvette.

An incredible barn find that was in the same ownership from 1965 to 2016, this 1963 Chevrolet Corvette is one of 199 equipped with the legendary RPO Z06 Special Performance Equipment package and one of only 63 produced with the RPO N03 36-gallon fuel tank. It is in sensational condition after an extensive body-off restoration completed in 2017 after being kept in storage for 51 years. The Z06 combined the most powerful Corvette engine, the L84 327/360 HP Rochester fuel-injected small-block V-8, with a mandatory close-ratio 4-speed manual transmission and 3.70 Positraction rear end. Heavy-duty springs and shocks and a larger-diameter front sway bar were included, but it was the Z06’s brake system that truly separated it from other production Corvettes. It featured a vacuum-assisted dual-circuit master cylinder actuating sintered-metallic brake shoes and finned cast-iron drums with five holes in the drum faces; the backing plates incorporated screened openings through which rubber “elephant ear” scoops directed cool air drawn in by internal fans attached to the hubs. The Z06 was the hairiest Corvette ever built, but its success was fleeting as Chevrolet management clamped down on factory-backed racing efforts, halting production at 199 units just as it was proving its mettle on the nation’s race tracks. This extraordinary 1963 Z06 coupe retains its original matching-numbers driveline and includes CCAS/Grenning engine-stamp affirmation. It was displayed in discovery condition in Bloomington Gold's Legends Row display and at Corvettes at Carlisle in 2016, and then again at Carlisle in 2017 after its restoration was completed. Finished in the factory-correct color combination of Ermine White with a red interior, this rare Z06 is documented with the dealer invoice and deposit check receipt from 1965, as well as a three-ring binder with old photos, maintenance records and other historic documents.

·         The only known Black 1967 435 HP Convertible to receive Bloomington Gold Benchmark and NCRS Top Flight

If originality is of paramount value in the world of collector Corvettes, this 1967 L71 427/435 HP 4-speed convertible handily qualifies as a potential crown jewel in any collection. In addition to being a multiple Bloomington Gold and NCRS award winner, this is the only known Tuxedo Black-on-black 1967 435 HP convertible to earn both Bloomington Gold Benchmark and NCRS Top Flight honors. Optioned with a close-ratio 4-speed, F41 suspension, G81 Positraction differential with 4.11:1 gears, Off Road exhaust, Soft Ray-tinted glass and an AM/FM radio, this extraordinary 435 HP Corvette has benefited from decades of caring ownership.
When original owner Bob Olderog and his girlfriend, Connie, arrived at Bob Eriksen Chevy Center in Milan, Illinois, to pick up his new Corvette, he was disheartened to find it wore the red Stinger stripe he had ordered deleted. Fortunately, the factory apparently refused his request to remove the stripe as the dealer ordered and, over time, he grew to appreciate it. He did, however, change the wheels and tires at the family business, Olderog Tire Service, Inc., in Davenport, Iowa. After two years of babying his beloved Corvette, in 1969, Olderog married Connie and sold the car to his close friend Dan Hummel, who also assiduously cared for it until purchasing a new red 1973 Corvette coupe. Hummel then sold the 1967 convertible to Terry Brotman, but after finding it a handful, he sold it to Dave Schultz. That relationship was just as brief; finding the car too expensive to run, Schultz advertised it for sale in January 1974. California resident David Kovolat, who was already familiar with the Corvette, saw the ad and arranged to purchase the car and ship it to his home in San Francisco, where it arrived with 15,600 original miles on the odometer. After 13 years passed, in 1987, Kovolat sold the car to his younger brother Tom, who had long coveted it. Understanding the Corvette’s rarity and growing value, Tom drove it sparingly before placing it in careful storage in his Colorado garage. By the time Tom sold it to Chris Piscitello, in 2002, the Corvette had been in the Kovolat brothers’ care for 28 years and showed a mere 23,800 miles.

The car’s incredible state of preservation is a tremendous credit to its owners and a boon to the Corvette community. Its Tuxedo Black paint and standard black vinyl interior are factory original, as are its dated black soft top and matching auxiliary hardtop, Rally wheels and non-DOT blackwall tires. The car’s incredible originality even extends to items normally replaced as part of regular maintenance, including the original dated F41 shock absorbers, drive belts, hoses and spark-plug wires. At Bloomington Gold 2003, Piscitello reunited the Corvette with original owners Bob and Connie Olderog for the first time in 30 years. Kolovat was also on hand to meet the Olderogs and thank Bob personally for originally ordering this marvelous piece of Corvette history. The gathering was also treated to watching the car receive Best Photo Album, Survivor and Gold Awards, culminating in Benchmark Certification—America’s most prestigious Corvette award—making it the only black-on-black 435 HP convertible to win all four. The car achieved yet another milestone in 2009 when it was invited to Bloomington Gold Special Collection XXII. With its provenance as an unrestored, highly original, fully documented multiple-award winner, this magnificent tri-power convertible possesses all the attributes that recommend it to the collector who demands the absolute best.

·         Comer performed a professional repaint in the original Rouge Iris color and sorted the car mechanically

This 1965 Shelby Cobra Roadster, Serial No. CSX2588, holds a special place in Cobra history as the last Shelby 289 Cobra sold to the public and the penultimate built.
Opportunities to own truly significant automobiles can often prove fleeting, and the availability of CSX2588 could be a landmark sale. That is because CSX2588, constructed in 1965, is the very last 289 Shelby Cobra sold new to the public and the second-to-last example built, the final example having been retained by the Carroll Shelby family since new. It is also the last 4-speed 289 Cobra Roadster built, as the final car, CSX2589, was fitted from new with an automatic transmission personally for Carroll Shelby.
Both the first and last small-block Cobras built, CSX2000 and CSX2589 respectively, remained in the Shelby family’s ownership for decades until the prototype, CSX2000, was sold at auction in August 2016 for $13.75 million. Since then, the family has made it clear they have no plans to sell CSX2589, making its immediate predecessor, CSX2588, serially the last small-block Cobra available to the public.
CSX2588 is a prime original example that carries the legacy forward as it presents complete with its original chassis, body, engine and drivetrain, and though mechanically sorted, has never required a full restoration. Indeed, the car is very correct with the steering wheel, gauges, original exhaust manifolds, radiator and the like all there. One of 56 leaf-spring Cobras finished in Rouge Iris, it was professionally repainted in its rare original color back in 2006 during ownership by expert Colin Comer, who also sorted it mechanically and installed new carpeting. CSX2588 retains its 289 CI Hi-Po V-8 with aluminum intake and Holley 715 CFM Le Mans-design carburetor, and it was optioned with “Class A” accessories from new; weather equipment includes the original side curtains, top frame and a new tonneau cover.
This stunning car was delivered new to Vel’s Ford Sales in Torrance, California, by Don McCain of the Shelby marketing office, and it stayed in California until 1993, when it was sold at auction in Las Vegas during an FDIC liquidation in 1993. Comer bought it from the succeeding owner in 2006 and performed the minor refreshing; a collector out of New York then acquired it prior to this gem joining the Mecum Collection.

It has been professionally maintained ever since, participated in Tom Cotter’s Cobra 1000 Rally in 2010 without incident, and it is fully documented in the SAAC’s Cobra World Registry. CSX2588, the last 289 Cobra sold to the public, offers an unparalleled opportunity to own an exclusive Shelby icon.

This 2016 Ferrari LaFerrari Aperta represents the ultimate in Ferrari style, performance, technical advancements and exclusivity. Ferrari drew deeply from its well of technological expertise to produce the LaFerrari, the most sensational production road car ever to wear the Prancing Horse symbol. Launched in 2013 and limited to 499 examples in Berlinetta form, the LaFerrari was sold out before production began, but following Ferrari tradition, the Maranello firm soon thereafter announced the LaFerrari Aperta, the designation translating to “open” after the Latin “apertura.”
Introduced in October 2016 to commemorate Ferrari’s 70th anniversary, the LaFerrari Aperta is even more exclusive than its predecessor, with production limited to a mere 210 cars, 200 of which were reserved, not surprisingly, for Ferrari’s most passionate and faithful customers. Like the LaFerrari, the Aperta employs the advanced technology born of the company’s Formula One hybrid powertrain and chassis design expertise.
The Aperta shares the same hybrid powertrain as the LaFerrari, pairing the world’s most powerful V-12—a 6.3L DOHC 4-valve engine with 13.5:1 compression and F1-derived Dynamic Ram Effect induction rated at 789 HP—and a 161 HP electric motor using F1 energy recovery and application programming for a combined output of 950 HP at 9,000 RPM and 663 lb-ft of torque at 6,750 RPM. Integrated with the V-12 by Ferrari’s F1-inspired HY-KERS (Hybrid Kinetic Energy Recovery System), the electric motor kicks in during low-speed acceleration and in the microseconds between shifts of the 7-speed dual-clutch F1 automatic gearbox to deliver fully linear, uninterrupted power. The numbers tell the story: 0 to 60 MPH in 2.4 seconds, 125 MPH in less than 7 seconds and a top speed of 217.5 MPH. The Aperta’s Brembo disc brakes integrate with the HY-KERS and use lighter calipers with a specific design designed to guarantee perfect heat dissipation from the new carbon-ceramic rotors.
The dynamic control systems incorporated into the Aperta’s active aerodynamics also remain the same as in the LaFerrari, including the large adjustable rear spoiler, movable diffuser flaps redirecting air for optimal downforce at any speed, and an incredibly efficient rear diffuser. Advanced computer controls also manage the Aperta’s double-wishbone front and multilink rear suspension, employing magnetorheological damping with twin solenoid controls, electronic stability control and E-Diff 3 electronic traction control for confident at-the-limit handling and excellent driver feedback.
Most significantly, Ferrari engineered the open-cockpit Aperta with an array of specific modifications designed to counter the increased flexing inherent in any roofless design, achieving the same torsional strength and structural robustness as the LaFerrari.

Iconic Rosso Corsa paint coats this 2016 LaFerrari Aperta’s sleek coachwork and provides dramatic contrasting accents on the Pirelli P-Zero-shod 19-inch and 20-inch forged alloy wheels and brake calipers, the theme repeating on the exposed intake plenum and in the black leather and carbon-fiber interior. Exterior options include Argento Nürburgring racing livery trim; carbon-fiber wheel caps, outside mirrors, lower trim and rear fog lamp; black sport exhaust tips; a front lift system; and a black carbon-fiber hardtop. The LaFerrari Aperta’s charger, books, manuals, tool kit and car cover are included, along with a set of driving gloves. On the interior of this pristine example, optional amenities include telemetry and track cameras, integrated audio with navigation and red headrest embroidery. This is the ultimate open-cockpit road Ferrari of all time, offering an unparalleled driving experience and incomparable exclusivity.
