This 1957 Chevrolet Corvette has been driven just 200 miles since the completion of a comprehensive frame-off rotisserie restoration in 2015. The 1957 Corvette was the beneficiary of one of the most intensive development periods in Corvette history to that point. It began in 1955, when total sales of just 700 Corvettes shocked Chevrolet and GM management and spurred a crash performance program designed to make or break this new fiberglass-bodied two-seater. Corvette engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov perceived an opportunity to breathe new life into Corvette with a record run at the Daytona Beach speed trials, but that was conditional on finding the power to propel his baby to the minimum of 150 MPH essential to setting a new record. Drawing on years of experience tuning pushrod engines, he designed a new cam profile with an eye to extract the 30 HP he believed would achieve that end. Tests at Phoenix of the new cam in a 265 CI engine resulted in a top speed of 163 MPH at 6,300 RPM, which proved enough to drive a test mule to a two-way average of 150.583 MPH on the Daytona sand. A famous class victory at Sebring served notice that Corvette was finally “The Real McCoy,” and the die was cast. An increase to 283 CI further elevated power in 1957. In both carbureted and the new fuel-injected versions of the 283 CI V-8, the aptly named Duntov cam was indispensable in establishing a new reputation for performance. This 1957 Corvette is powered by the Duntov-cammed engine incorporating dual inline Carter 4-barrel carburetors for a factory rating of 270 HP, with the added advantage of the BorgWarner 4-speed manual transmission introduced that year. An exceptional restoration completed in iconic Venetian Red with white coves and a red interior, it rides on wide whitewall tires on correct steel wheels with full-size spinner wheel covers, making it an eye-catching example of this great vintage in Corvette history.

The year was 1939, and as the winds of war again blew across Europe, America’s economy roared into action. The new car market was no different, and Ford had created a separate Deluxe body line in 1938 to offer a more refined automobile between the standard Ford and upscale Lincoln lines. This gorgeous coupe was one of those Deluxe models. A high-demand example with its all-steel body, this 2-door, 5-window coupe was honored with an AACA Senior award in 2003, and it has been driven a mere 8 miles since its comprehensive restoration. Painted an attractive Dartmouth Green, the sculpted ‘39 Deluxe body was beautifully stylized with chrome trim, immediately reminiscent of the Art Deco movement. This was the first year Ford offered hydraulic brakes. The grille featured a V-shape layout with vertical bars, while additional horizontal cues accented the body lines themselves. Fender skirts and the extra-cost wide whitewall tires complete the late 1930s dynamic. Power comes from a 24-stud 221 CI flathead V-8 engine, rated at 85 HP and 155 lb-ft of torque in 1939, well-capable of pushing the car to speeds in the triple digits using its 6.15:1 compression. Atop the 90-degree engine is a downdraft carburetor and Ford oil-bath air cleaner, a floor-shifted 3-speed transmission backing it up. Blending with the darker green exterior is tan leather upholstery inside, featuring the Deluxe banjo steering wheel, woodgrain dash and moldings, plus a radio and antenna. Other exterior options were the bumper guards, draft deflectors, dual windshield wipers and even a Ford dealer accessory license-plate frame. From the whitewall tires to its Zephyr-inspired grille treatment, this car exudes the essence of Detroit’s working man in the age preceding the infamy of Pearl Harbor. Of the near-half-million cars from Ford that year, only 37,000 were of this design, and most of those remaining today will pale in comparison to the beautiful AACA-winning automobile offered here.
