Initiated in March 2006, the Hertz Fun Collection was always intended to feature "fun-to-drive" vehicles, such as the Nissan 350Z, PT Cruiser, Miata and Wrangler. When Vice President of Hertz Worldwide Fleet Operations Walt Seaman was looking for a special vehicle to be the focal point of the Fun Collection in 2005, he found just the idea he was looking for in a 1966 Shelby GT350H displayed proudly in the lobby of the Hertz Headquarters. Looking back upon Hertz’s GT350H “Rent A Racer” program, Seaman approached Ford Motor Company about producing 500 Mustang GT coupes to commemorate the program that had started 40 years ago, his original thoughts including some simple cosmetic changes, like the trademark gold stripes. However, as luck would have it, Seaman would soon find out Ford was already working with Shelby American to develop a special car. Hertz, Shelby and Ford met, and in less than 90 days developed the Shelby GT-H Program. What started as a black 2006 Mustang GT coupe was then shipped to Shelby American in Las Vegas for some fairly significant upgrades, such as a new front fascia, hood, side air scoops and a Ford Racing Performance Package. The parts used to modify the car were all numbered Ford pieces—the front fascia and side scoops, for example, were sourced from a future Ford model dubbed the “California Edition”—the exception being the Shelby hood, making replacement parts readily available from Ford. The GT-H was introduced to the world at the New York Auto Show in April 2006, and the used rental units were sold exclusively to Ford dealers at closed auctions. Shelby produced 496 automatic units for the Hertz rental fleet, of which 20 were purchased by Hertz executives and never rented. The remaining four Mustang GTs came with a manual transmission and a factory 18-inch wheel package, slightly large in comparison to the 17-inch wheels offered on the automatic variations. The four 5-speed manual transmission units were never rented. While CSM No. 06H001 went to Carroll Shelby and two others went to Hertz vice presidents, the one-of-four car offered here is CSM No. 06H002, the very same Mustang previously owned by Seaman.

Many consider the 1971 Boss 351 to be the overall best of the legendary Boss Mustangs. This red-on-red example retains its original drivetrain, original interior, and has only been driven 17,677 miles since new. For 1971, the Boss 351 SportsRoof replaced the 1969-70 Boss 302 by putting sufficient cubic inches under the large-port, staggered-valve Cleveland heads, improving torque to give the mid-displacement Boss a boost down low while also boosting horsepower to 330 at higher revs. According to era drag tests, the Boss 351 was as quick—if not quicker—than muscle cars with 100 more cubic inches under the hood. The Boss 351 was the total performance package in the final year of the Boss Mustang. Based on the 351 Cleveland, the Boss version came with a 4-bolt main bearing block, solid-lifter camshaft, and a 750 CFM Autolite 4-barrel carburetor on a unique aluminum intake manifold. Ram-Air through the NACA-duct hood was standard equipment, along with Competition Suspension with 15-inch Magnum 500 wheels, heavy-duty 4-speed with Hurst shifter, and 9-inch rear end with Traction-Lok differential and 3.91:1 gearing. Staggered rear shocks dampened wheel hop during hard acceleration. Externally, subtle “Boss 351 Mustang” block lettering decals on the front fenders and trunk lid differentiated the Boss from the Mach 1 and other 1971 SportsRoofs, along with “hockey-stick” side stripes, full hood black-out, and black rear panel. This Boss 351 is one of eight with the Bright Red exterior and Vermilion cloth and vinyl interior. The body was restored by Dicky Dills in the original color and the car retains its original engine and drivetrain. The Magnum 500 wheels are wrapped in OEM-style Firestone Wide Oval tires. A Deluxe Marti Report confirms this Boss 351’s provenance as a genuine piece of Mustang muscle-car history.

One of the longest-running nameplates in Chrysler’s history, the Town & Country was manufactured first as a station wagon beginning in 1940 and ending for three years in 1942 at the outset of World War II. After the end of World War II in 1945, the Town & Country returned in 4-door sedan and 2-door coupe and convertible forms with woody coachwork. In 1950, the Town & Country bowed as the last true wood-bodied production automobile, to be replaced with an all-new full-size steel-bodied station wagon powered by another Chrysler product making its debut, the FireDome hemispherical-head V-8 engine. A number of innovations are associated with this new model, including roll-down rear tailgate windows in 1951 and, in 1957, rear-facing third-row seating. In 1951, the Town & Country nameplate appeared on New Yorker, Saratoga and Windsor models. In 1952, the New Yorker was dropped, only to return in 1953 when the Saratoga series was terminated. In 1954, Chrysler once again offered a luxurious New Yorker version and the more affordable Windsor Deluxe, the latter powered by Chrysler’s workhorse 264 CI inline-6 flathead engine. Built on a 125.5-inch wheelbase, the Windsor Deluxe offered the same spacious passenger accommodations as the New Yorker and incorporated leather upholstery and Mahogany wood cargo decking. Only 650 of these well-appointed 6-passenger station wagons were built, making examples such as this Town & Country particularly attractive to collectors. Powered by the aforementioned 264 CI inline-6 mated to a Powerflite 2-speed automatic transmission, this rare Town & Country is nicely presented in white-over-maroon paint with a matching two-tone leather interior, ample decorative exterior chrome, Firestone wide whitewall tires and fog lights. Also fitted with an AM radio, deluxe heater, dash-mounted compass and fold-down rear seats, this is a great example of a Chrysler classic.
