The first Ferrari to carry the GTO name since the vaunted 250 GTO, it was clear that Ferrari had high hopes and was proud of its newest sports racer, the 288 GTO. Looking to compete in the FIA’s now-legendary Group B, Ferrari produced and designed the 288 GTO in order to homologate it for competition within that series, which called for a production run of 200 cars.
Group B took the world by storm following its introduction in the early ’80s, especially in Europe. With a number of manufacturers competing on a world stage with automobiles engineered to a radical degree with few rules and regulations to keep them in check, Group B rallying was just as thrilling as it was dangerous. Ferrari was eager to jump into the fray and certain that they could compete with the likes of the Group B establishment, including Audi, Peugeot, and Lancia. However, this was not to be. With Group B cancelled in 1987, Ferrari had fully developed and homologated the 288 GTO, yet it never got its chance to race. Rather than leaving the 288 GTO on the shelf, Ferrari was not dissuaded from selling the car to its most loyal customers.
Built on a sturdy tubular steel chassis, it boasted a wheelbase longer than the production 308 GTB, and it rode on four-wheel independent suspension. The new Tipo F114B mid-mounted V-8 was installed longitudinally rather than transversely, and it produced 400 hp through four valves per cylinder, Weber-Marelli electronic fuel injection, twin IHI turbochargers, and dual Behr intercoolers.
The doors, trunk, and engine-lid were shod in lightweight aluminum, while GRP and carbon compound formed the balance of the bodywork – a taste of the carbon fiber to come. Visually, the car resembled the 308 GTB, but it was much more aggressive in nature, sporting large flared wheel arches to accommodate bigger wheels, 8-in. wide at the front and 10-in. wide at the rear. Larger spoilers were also fitted fore and aft, the result of extensive wind-tunnel testing. The rear wings had three cooling slots behind the wheel, a fitting tribute to the 250 GTO.
Despite boasting a 189 mph top speed, the 288 GTO was suitably outfitted for road use. Boasting leather-trimmed seats as well as air conditioning and electric windows available as optional extras, driver and passenger comfort would not be an issue. Clearly a big hit with Ferrari’s clientele, 272 examples were built, which was over 25 percent more than the required homologation amount. When taking the supercars that came after, the F40, F50, Enzo, and LaFerrari, into account, the 288 GTO is the rarest of the vaunted quintet.
Produced for the 1985 model year, this 288 GTO boasts the desirable options of red seat inserts, air conditioning, as well as power windows. It was sold new it its first owner, Renee Ceryl West, in June of 1985 according to a report compiled by Ferrari historian Marcel Massini. Later that summer, the car returned to its original selling dealer, Newport Imports, with only 579 miles. The car’s next registered owner was Palm Springs-based collector Bob Pond, who purchased the 288 GTO in August of 1994. That same month, the car was shown at the Ferrari Club of America National Meeting and Concours in Monterey.
It is believed that the 288 GTO remained in the Pond collection for a number of years and was sold in 2007 to Alex Bize, a businessman residing in New York. Bize showed the car at the Cavallino Classic in Palm Beach, Florida, in January of 2008. The car was later sold to a Texas-based collector in November of 2010 and remained with him until recently. Importantly, the car has just received a full service, which included the timing belts. A compression test done at the time confirms that the engine is in excellent working order.
Having travelled less than 2,900 miles from new, it goes without saying that this 288 GTO presents in excellent condition, clearly having been well cared for throughout its life by the lucky owners. Thanks to a recent service, this 288 GTO is ready to drive and enjoy should its next owner so desire – or would be a prime candidate for inclusion into a collection of Ferraris, as a pristine and low-mileage example of the first of the marque’s sensational line of supercars. This 1984 Ferrari 512 BBi is presented in the original Rosso Corsa exterior and sumptuous tan leather interior with the very desirable Daytona seat pattern. The Boxer’s interior combines a race car’s intimacy with the comfort of a grand-touring machine, including air conditioning and power windows. This is one of only 1,007 Boxers produced in the final series from 1981-84, with the last year being the most refined systems for power and reliability. The powerful flat 12-cylinder naturally aspirated 4,942cc overhead four-cam engine inspired by Formula 1 racing develops 335 HP. The Bosch K-Jetronic fuel-injection system provides strong performance and smooth drivability, while reliability is also enhanced by use of a toothed timing belt instead of chains to drive the overhead camshafts. High-performance handling comes by way of front and rear unequal-length A-arm independent suspension, twin rear coil springs, an anti-roll bar, performance shock absorbers, hydraulic disc brakes and factory-correct Cromodora alloy TRX wheels with knock-off hubs. Full instrumentation monitors every aspect of the 512 BBi’s powertrain for the driver, with the iconic gated manual shifter giving direct engagement of the 5-speed transaxle gearbox. All of these combined for exceptional performance in the 512 BBi’s day with a 174 MPH estimated top speed and 0 to 60 MPH time of 5.4 seconds. The 512 BBi Boxer is the first of the midengine supercars from Ferrari and the last hand-built production model by body manufacturer Scaglietti, with its all-steel-tube structure supporting the aluminum hood, doors and engine cover. A recent engine-out service brought maintenance items current, and this Boxer has ventured only 13,482 kilometers since new.

A virtual time capsule with only 252 original miles, this 1989 Porsche 911 Speedster presents in near showroom condition. The Speedster was re-introduced in 1989 as the spiritual successor to the iconic roadster that was originally produced during the Porsche 356 era. One of a mere 823 examples specifically earmarked for importation into the U.S., this is a rare tourist delivery with European plates. The Speedster was a one-year-only model for 1989 that paid homage to its ancestor with its competition-inspired silhouette defined by an open-air roadster body augmented with a low-slung and steeply raked windshield. Further design inspiration on the 1989 Porsche 911 Speedster included flared front and rear fenders sourced from the 930 Turbo and the fitment of wide Fuchs alloy wheels mounted on low-profile, high-performance radial tires. Presented in the classic color of Guards Red with a black convertible top that nicely contrast the Cashmere Beige leather interior with a deviating black on the dashboard and upper door sills, the car is a stunning example of originality and preservation. This 911 Speedster is factory equipped with a long list of desirable options including air conditioning, limited-slip differential, sport seats, short-shift gear lever and a Blaupunkt Charleston radio. Powered by a fuel-injected 3.2L flat-6 engine mated to a G50 5-speed transmission, the drivetrain on this vintage 911 Porsche is legendary for being both bulletproof and delivering amazing performance. The 911 Speedster also came equipped with a superb braking system consisting of cross-drilled and vented rotors with multipiston calipers derived from Porsche’s championship-winning 917 race car. This beautiful machine comes with its factory-issued Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, original owner’s manual including the Speedster supplement, and two original master keys with the leather pouch. The 1989 Porsche 911 Speedsters were the last of the models produced at the old Stuttgart factory, and this particular car presents a rare opportunity to own an incredibly low-mile example of Porsche history.

The history of the Macho Trans Am dates back to 1977 when two brothers, Dennis and Kyle Mecham, sons of a Phoenix area Pontiac dealer decided to begin modifying Firebirds to restore some of the missing performance brought about by the addition of more and more emissions equipment on factory cars. The brothers began by adding turbochargers in 1977. In 1978 203 Macho TAs would come out of the DKM shop. A W72/L78 engine was used as a baseline, the carb and ignition were modified and a set of Hooker headers and twin catalytic converters were added for a net 50bhp gain. An optional turbo-charger could also be added for a 7psi boost. Interestingly, the TAs were all sold as used cars. This was required because Federal law prohibited any modifications to the emissions system on a new car. The dealership, Mecham Pontiac, sold the new cars to Mecham Performance. The modifications were performed and the cars were then sold to the public. They had virtually no miles on them and had no tags but were sold as a used car because the had already been titled by Mecham Performance.

Production continued in 1979 where both the 400 and 403 versions of the Trans Am received the modifications required for a Macho Trans Am. DKM performed several other modifications including modifying the hood scoop to make it functional. Suspensions were also modified by adding Koni shocks, front springs retempered for rake and re-calibrated geometry. Visual appearance was also changed. Macho options included Recaro or Scheel seats, Fosgate stereo, different wheels and tires, fiberglass hood and the new paint scheme that varied by color. Every Macho TA also received a production number

1979 also saw the release of a very limited run of a new offering from DKM, the DKM Tallon Super Tourer. This Firebird could be ordered with a turbo-charged 400 or a normally aspirated 350 Chevy. The Tallon received fiberglass fenders, hood, rear quarters and bolt-on air dam. American Specialty wheels with 50 series tires were installed. Hooker headers, a 5-speed Doug Nash tranny, Koni shocks and the WS6 package were also added. At significant additional cost ($7600) a Traco-built Chevy 350 rated at 460bhp could be installed.

DKMs efforts continued through the '80s with the MR MSE TAs (Mecham Racing Motor Sports Edition) which were produced from 1982 to 1986. In 1997 Dennis was approached by a Macho fan and owner about producing a new Mecham TA. After some initial discussions the decision was made to produce a few cars and that effort continued throughout the 2002 model year. A Mecham T/A and a Mecham Formula were both offered.
