General Motors’ Motorama tour provided a dazzling display of technological innovation that highlighted a multitude of stunning automotive concepts. Buick’s Skylark displayed many trendsetting features, including a new OHV 322 CI V-8 engine, 12-volt electrical system, fully radiused rear wheel openings, Kelsey-Hayes 40-spoke wire wheels and stylish “Sweepspear” chrome body accents that would find their way into future Buick models. By lowering the top and seat height, designers gave the Skylark a low, sporty look and an overall height of just 5 feet. The low-slung Buick did not just look the part; it came equipped with luxurious amenities to match its sporty exterior: power steering and brakes, power windows, seat and antenna, Selectronic signal-seeking radio, pleated leather upholstery and a power-operated top. Only 1,690 Skylarks were produced in 1953. The 1953 Skylark presented here was treated to a professional restoration benefiting from knowledgeable ownership and thorough maintenance in a noted private collection. It remains an excellent example finished in Light Patriot Blue and beautifully accented by superb brightwork and a set of chrome wire wheels. The inviting interior is trimmed in two-tone blue and white leather upholstery. The matching dash, steering wheel and controls are likewise correct, attractive and very well-maintained for a great presentation. This certified milestone car remains in excellent overall condition. From its handsome grille to its trendsetting and curvaceous body lines, this 1953 Skylark is a classic American luxury convertible with the engineering and amenities to match its commanding presence and the distinction of being one of a very limited few produced in that vintage year.

A fresh frame-off restoration that has been driven just 500 miles since its completion, this 1954 Chevrolet Corvette Roadster has been a part of the famous Darryl Starbird Collection in Afton, Oklahoma, since 1994. The “Bubbletop King,” as Starbird is known, previously restored the car to factory specifications, unlike many of his head-turning custom builds in the past that garnered national acclaim. Chevrolet began churning out the 1954 model Corvettes from its freshly refurbished St. Louis plant on December 28, 1954, after projecting sales of 10,000 units per year. However, production slowed to a virtual standstill, the result of cooled demand caused by the difficulty potential buyers faced trying to buy the 1953 model. To bring them back into the fold, Chevrolet offered an expanded color range, even though 85 percent of buyers still opted for the Polo White used exclusively in 1953. Changes were few in 1954 models. The dual tailpipes were extended to eliminate the staining caused by the shorter pipes used in 1953; twin chromed open-element air filters replaced the original three bullet-shaped inlets; and a new camshaft added 5 HP, raising output to 155 HP. In addition, the dual hood latch arrangement on 1953 models was replaced by a single release. Corvette was offered with a wide variety of so-called options, including directional signals, a heater, signal-seeking AM Wonderbar radio, parking-brake alarm, courtesy lights and vacuum-operated windshield washers, all of which were installed by the factory on every car produced. Powered by the 235/155 HP Blue Flame Six engine mated to a Powerglide 2-speed automatic transmission, this comprehensively restored 1954 Corvette was awarded Best in Show honors by event sponsor Bomnin Chevrolet at the 32nd annual Spring Meet of the Sunshine Corvette Club in Miami, Florida, in March 2018. Even almost 50 years later, the performance focus of the 1970 Challenger R/T release is evident. The cab design, optional components, possible color combinations and vehicle stance were created to give a sense of gentlemanly respect, and the car offered here certainly would have been more than a Saturday night special for its first owner. Decked out stylishly with B5 Blue paint, white longitudinal striping and matched white vinyl interior and top, this Challenger from that first year of production is the result of a multi-year rotisserie restoration. Completed in July 2016 by Ozark Mountain Classics in Mountain Home, Arkansas, using original and NOS parts whenever possible, it is easy to understand why this car was brought back to an exacting standard. Under the hood is the matching-numbers U-code 440 CI V-8 engine equipped with a 4-barrel carburetor, dual-snorkel air cleaner with 440 Magnum pie pan, factory-cast exhaust manifolds and dual pipes ending with chrome tips. Coupled to this is the hot A33 Track Pack, with its heavy-duty 4-speed transmission, Dana 60 differential, 3.54 gearing and Sure Grip. There are power steering and power brakes with front discs as well. Inside is also sharply dressed, featuring high-back bucket seats, a center console, Hurst Pistol Grip shifter, thumb-wheel style AM/FM radio, Rallye dash cluster, remote driver’s mirror and even power windows. The blue/white color combination is broken up only by chrome touches like the drip rail, wheel well and lower rocker moldings, plus the locking fuel door, R/T emblems in the grille and rear panel, script Challenger tags and displacement callouts on the sport hood with its hold-down pins. Rather than opting for the Rallye wheel design, this Challenger rides on the classic 5-spoke-appearance styled road wheels using Goodyear Polyglas tires. Showcasing a sense of beauty throughout, yet with horsepower to back up its name, this Challenger R/T is an excellent example of what has made buyers “Dodge Material” even to this day.
