When is a Mustang not a Mustang? When it’s a T-5, like this 1966 convertible that was exported to Germany, a country where the “Mustang” copyright was held by a truck manufacturer. Since Germany was an important sales district because of American servicemen stationed there, Ford marketed the Mustang as the T-5, one of the earliest code names for the new pony car. Instead of Mustang lettering on the front fender, the German exports carried a small ”T-5” emblem, along with other special equipment like metric gauges and stiffer “export brace” for cowl-to-shock-tower support. The T-5 Registry estimates that only 340 1965-66 T-5s exist. This T-5 convertible from the Wayne Davis Collection is also a GT model, an option that added a 289 CI 4-barrel V-8, Special Handling Package, front disc brakes, quick-ratio steering, grille-mounted fog lights, side stripes and trumpet exhaust tips that extended through the rear valance. A quality restoration by Thunderbirds Etc., the Nightmist Blue T-5 is also well-equipped with factory options, including an automatic transmission, under-dash air conditioning with “short” floor console, power convertible top in white, Rally Pac tachometer and clock on the steering column, styled steel wheels with white-stripe tires, and dual outside mirrors. Under the hood is a nicely detailed A-code 289 that came from the factory with a 225 HP rating. The interior is the optional and attractive two-tone blue and white Décor version, also known as the “Pony” interior, that adds bucket seats with embossed running horses in the upholstery, molded door panels with courtesy lights and wood-grain trim. Many years ago upon its return to the U.S., a previous owner replaced the original metric gauges with U.S. units. Splendid in its appearance and unique in its rarity, this well-optioned and wonderfully restored German export GT convertible is listed in the T-5 Registry.
