Despite the restrictions on engine displacement imposed by GM on its various divisions in the 1960s, someone always seemed to find a way around the constraints to produce truly memorable muscle cars. In the Chevy realm it was Vince Piggins and his COPO cars; Pontiac adherents could turn to dealers such as Royal and Knafel, while Oldsmobile had a champion in the innovative George Hurst, who endowed the already popular 442 with extra horsepower and flash to produce the famed Hurst Olds. Using Oldsmobile’s largest engine, the 455 CI big block used in the Division’s luxury sedans, the Hurst Olds was packed not only with 390 horses but a full complement of optional extras as well, and Hurst sold every one it could build, a total of almost 1,500 over 1968-69.
Documented as car number 211 of 912 built in 1969, this authentic restored 1969 Hurst Olds coupe packs a NOM 455 CI High Output V-8 engine - with the correct casting number – backed by the original matching numbers 400 Turbo Hydra-Matic transmission and augmented with power steering and brakes. The Hurst appearance package includes Cameo White paint with Firefrost Gold accents and Black pinstriping, Hurst/Olds fender and trunk badges, the iconic twin-scooped hood with Ram Air intake system and 455 engine callouts, a fiberglass rear spoiler and color-keyed Rally road wheels, here mounting BF Goodrich Radial T/A tires. Another trademark feature of the Hurst Olds is the high-grade Black interior fitted with bucket seats and console, Hurst Dual Gate “His & Hers” shifter, factory tach and gauges and push-button radio.

There is something special about big-block pony cars. These smaller car designs were seemingly more suited for handling errands around town, but companies like Plymouth recognized that if they offered versions like this 440 Cuda, buyers were waiting. The beneficiary of a comprehensive restoration, this Plymouth came off the assembly line on February 20, 1970, one of 618 coupes created that year with the 440 4-barrel/A727 TorqueFlite driveline combination, and today it is one of one with this car’s specific equipment list in the Chrysler Registry. The matching-numbers U-code 440/375 HP V-8 engine is under the hood, likely selected so that factory air conditioning could be optioned as well. This is backed, however, by the A33 Track Pack Dana 60 rear end with 3.54 gears. The engine uses the dual-snorkel air cleaner with the 440 Super Commando pie-pan, while driving is enhanced thanks to power steering and power brakes with front discs. Being its first year on the new E-body platform, the Cuda became instantly recognizable, and many aficionados appreciate the model’s clean styling of the grille and rear panel, accented by the side hockey-stick stripe that ended in the displacement callout. Opting for the Cuda also meant some extra pieces as standard equipment, like the scalloped hood and rocker moldings. This car is painted Bright Blue Metallic with black stripes and features the matched Medium Blue interior. Inside are bucket seats and a center console, Slap-Stik shifter, wood-grain accents, air conditioning, a restored dash with original gauges, and a pushbutton radio. The original glass and windshield are both still intact. Under the car are Rallye wheels complete with Goodyear Polyglas GT F60-15 tires. Beautiful with matching exterior and interior colors, excellent street options and the desirability of being a 1970 Plymouth Cuda noted in the Chrysler Registry as one of one as equipped, here is a pony car with a stallion’s appetite for enjoyment.
