Harold and Helen Kite opened the first Burger Queen restaurant in 1956 in Winter Haven, Florida on Havendale Boulevard.
Burger Queen, owned by Harold Kite and a group of franchisees, grows to 16 locations across Florida by 1961. That same year, business partners George Clark and Mick Gannon bought franchise rights and permission to expand the chain to Kentucky. The first Kentucky location opens on September 23, 1962 in the Middletown area of Louisville.
At its height, the chain boasted over 170 locations in Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, and Tennessee, as well as Florida. Around 1990 most of the outposts turned into Dairy Queens and the chain phased out shortly thereafter.
