Developed as Honda's ambitious foray into the high-performance market, the manufacturer debuted the NSX in 1990. The groundbreaking vehicle was engineered with a potent combination of performance and reliability, leveraging Formula 1 learnings including an all-aluminum monocoque body—a first for a production car. The design team, led by Chief Designer Masahito Nakano and Executive Chief Engineer Shigeru Uehara, emphasized the importance of driver experience, focusing on superior handling, agility, and a user-friendly nature not commonly found in high-performance sports cars of the era. The NSX also set new standards for build quality and practicality, making it a unique proposition in its class.
For 1995, model updates culminated in the NSX-T. A switch to Targa-roof configuration as standard, fitment of limited-slip differential, and throttle-by-wire made the refreshed model an exotic on par with the heights of its competition. The car’s 3.0-liter V6 engine featured Honda’s innovative VTEC (Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control), producing 270 horsepower and 210 lb-ft of torque. Five-speed manual shifting paired with lithe dynamics gained via lightweight construction, a mid-engine layout, and double-wishbone suspension. Pop-up headlights and a low, wide stance, embodied the essence of a classic sports car while interior ergonomics offered a comfortable and engaging driving experience uncommon in high-performance vehicles of the time.
