This 1932 Packard Eight 902 Coupe from the outstanding Bruce Church Collection of fine automobiles enjoys Full Classic status under the support of the Classic Car Club of America. In 1923, Packard began using series numbers to identify each year’s model lineup, continuing that practice into the 1950s. In 1930, the Seventh Series began with the standard Eight models, which were relatively conservatively styled and built on the shorter 127.5-inch and 134.5-inch wheelbase chassis, both using Packard’s exceptional 320/90 HP inline 8-cylinder engine. In 1931, Packard’s standard models again featured the 320 CI inline-8, then rated at 100 HP. In addition to a new Bijur automatic chassis-lubrication system, one of the 1931 lineup’s more fascinating engineering developments was a new system devised by Chief Experimental Engineer Clyde R. Paton to eliminate the high-speed shimmy that plagued even the smooth-riding Packard. The system employed oil-tight containers at either end of each bumper containing a small weight between two damping springs. These acted with new Ride Control driver-adjustable shock absorbers—and rubber mounts that effectively turned the radiator and its coolant mass into one large shock absorber—to dampen road vibrations and their accompanying harmonics. Paton’s engineering breakthrough was standard equipment on this majestic 1932 Packard Eight 902 Coupe. Powered by the inline-8, then rated at 110 HP, and using a synchromesh 3-speed, this show-stopping Ninth Series coupe was awarded AACA Senior honors in 2008 and the AACA Grand National Award in 2010. Comprehensively restored in frame-off fashion, its rumble-seat coupe coachwork features luscious tri-tone blue exterior paint with wide whitewall tires on chromed wire wheels, twin horns and fender lamps, Pilot-Ray self-steering safety lights, a “Goddess of Speed” hood mascot and superior brightwork. The gorgeous cabin is a combination of expertly finished tan leather upholstery and renewed burled-wood accents of superb quality, all adding up to a wondrous automobile from Packard’s classic era.

Following the introduction of the flathead V-8 engine in 1932, the Ford lineup underwent incremental and evolutionary changes until 1934 when this Ford 5-Window Coupe was crafted into existence. The sleek coupe was honored with an Antique Automobile Club of America Senior Class Award in 2005 and has logged approximately 6 miles since undergoing a comprehensive restoration that returned the Ford to its time-proven combination of understated style and high-performance engineering that made the Model 40 an American favorite of everyday drivers and racers alike. Early versions of the flathead V-8 were not without problems. Production issues were sorted out for 1933, and they were largely forgotten by 1934 as the public embraced the value and performance of the V-8-powered Ford lineup. The year 1934 saw the introduction of Stromberg 2-barrel downdraft carburetion that helped the 221 CI 21-stud V-8 create 85 HP at 3,800 RPM. The V-8 delivers its power to the rear wheels through a floor-shifted sliding-gear 3-speed transmission with single conventional dry-plate clutch for brisk performance from the just more than 2,200-pound coupe. Mechanically operated internal expanding brakes work to scrub off speed. Streamlining was the order of the day in early 1930s Detroit, and with a young Edsel Ford at the helm, the 1932 Ford design language was refined for 1933 and 1934 with features like swept forward hood louvers, complemented here by Coach Maroon paint and red accent striping. An optional greyhound mascot radiator ornament leads the way over the rakish chrome-plated grille surround, headlamp bezels and one-piece drop-center bumpers. Opening the suicide doors reveals a tan mohair interior with woodgrain interior accents. The 5-window Coupe rides on black-painted wire wheels with chrome “V8” logo hubcaps and Goodyear piecrust blackwall tires. The matching rear-mounted spare is protected in a body-color metal case.

Accolades from the AACA on a national level can be a challenge to attain, and the car offered here, a 1934 Ford Deluxe Victoria with an all-steel body, took home a top AACA National First Prize in 2006. Beautifully refreshed throughout, this classic early Ford V-8 has been driven approximately 5 miles since that work was done, creating an excellent opportunity for its next owner. Once again displaying Mr. Church’s penchant for quality, this vehicle is a Series 40 Deluxe-trim version, featuring an 85 HP engine. Painted gold with bare-metal and as-cast finishes where appropriate, the 21-stud 221 CI flathead V-8 uses a downdraft carburetor and came with an associated 3-speed transmission with floor-shift. The exterior is beautifully covered in Coach Maroon with matched-red accent striping, and the car was further equipped with the expandable trunk compartment. The Deluxe designation allowed for the higher-horsepower engine and additional standard equipment. Inside is a very nice tan mohair interior, featuring the assorted simulated-woodgrain accents that has helped make these cars so attractive. The rich exterior paint tone is augmented by the chrome grille and associated headlamp bezels, chrome bumpers with bumper guards, cowl lamps, wing vents, dual wipers, extra horn and the chrome windshield frame. Of course, the greyhound mascot leading the car onward remains in place on the peak of the nose. The car is now equipped with special General Jumbo spoked wheels and tastefully executed red-painted rims. Wide whitewall tires complete the look. Though not heavily restyled, the 1934 models were solid sellers for Ford during the epic of the Great Depression, helping spearhead the brand’s model programs later in the decade. With AACA-granted provenance, the unique color arrangement and very few miles since the restoration, this Victoria is a stellar example of Ford’s third-year V-8 program.

The 1939 Ford marked the second update after the newly styled 1937 Ford, which had been introduced with more rounded lines compared to its predecessors. With the new styling created by Eugene T. “Bob” Gregorie under Edsel Ford’s guidance, the standard 1939 Fords looked very much like the 1938 versions, but the slightly more expensive Deluxe models came with a more stylish front end with a smaller, shorter grille along with a larger hood that replaced the side panels, “paperclip” stainless-steel side trim and headlights recessed outboard in the fenders instead of closer to the grille like the standard models. For the first time, the 1939 Ford adopted Lockheed-style hydraulic brakes for the entire line, an improvement that Henry Ford had initially resisted for perceived safety reasons. Other 1939 upgrades included improved cooling for the Deluxe Model 91A’s standard 221 CI flathead, which was a continuation of the updated 24-stud engine that had debuted in 1938. The coupe differed dramatically from the sedan with its teardrop-style rear fenders and bubble-like roof that flowed into the trunk. With only 3 miles since its comprehensive restoration, this 1939 Ford Deluxe coupe retains its all-steel body and tan interior with mohair upholstery, woodgrain dash and moldings and Deluxe banjo steering wheel. The Folkstone Gray coupe is equipped with the correct 221 flathead, which generates 85 HP and 155 lb-ft torque with its 6.15:1 compression and downdraft carburetor followed by a floor-shift 3-speed transmission. Additional amenities include fender skirts, bumper guards, draft deflectors, dual wipers, radio with roof-mounted antenna and Ford accessory license-plate frames. Completing the classic look are wide whitewall tires mounted on wheels with trim rings and Spyder hubcaps. Texto da Mecum.

Awarded an AACA Grand National Senior Award in 2002, this Deluxe Coupe features an all-steel body and has travelled approximately 23 miles since a comprehensive restoration. Powered by the 6.15:1 compression, 24-stud, 221/85 HP V-8 engine with downdraft carburetor, oil-bath air cleaner and floor-shifted 3-speed manual transmission, it’s good for 155 lb-ft of torque. Presenting exquisitely well, the Deluxe Coupe is extraordinarily well appointed with a woodgrain dash and moldings, a radio and antenna, fender skirts, bumper guards, draft deflectors, accessory license-plate frame, dual wipers, Spyder hubcaps with trim rings and wide whitewall tires. Painted in highly reflective Gull Grey with tan leather upholstery, the entire car is simply astonishing. The engine and engine bay present in seemingly flawless splendor, and the interior is a place of excellence. Slide behind the banjo steering wheel and roll down the road. The new-for-1939 hydraulic brakes were established across the Ford line and made a huge difference in drivability, which was needed thanks to the revised carburetion broadening the torque band. It’s easy to imagine the V-8 delivering smooth, steady power on demand, the transmission shifting with exceptional ease and a package that delivers an absolutely dreamy ride. This year was a busy one for Ford, as the new cars received revised styling and Mercury was introduced as an upscale brand situated between Ford and Lincoln, closing the gap between the brands. Seeing cars like this Deluxe Coupe begs the question, how? It seems clear Ford was doing just fine offering higher and higher levels of elegance, performance and refinement with a Blue Oval on the grille; but it was the call of the day for companies to offer something else, something different, something upscale from the entry-level brands. This Deluxe Coupe offers a lot of upscale for a working-man’s automobile.
