The 1939 Ford marked the second update after the newly styled 1937 Ford, which had been introduced with more rounded lines compared to its predecessors. With the new styling created by Eugene T. “Bob” Gregorie under Edsel Ford’s guidance, the standard 1939 Fords looked very much like the 1938 versions, but the slightly more expensive Deluxe models came with a more stylish front end with a smaller, shorter grille along with a larger hood that replaced the side panels, “paperclip” stainless-steel side trim and headlights recessed outboard in the fenders instead of closer to the grille like the standard models. For the first time, the 1939 Ford adopted Lockheed-style hydraulic brakes for the entire line, an improvement that Henry Ford had initially resisted for perceived safety reasons. Other 1939 upgrades included improved cooling for the Deluxe Model 91A’s standard 221 CI flathead, which was a continuation of the updated 24-stud engine that had debuted in 1938. The coupe differed dramatically from the sedan with its teardrop-style rear fenders and bubble-like roof that flowed into the trunk. With only 3 miles since its comprehensive restoration, this 1939 Ford Deluxe coupe retains its all-steel body and tan interior with mohair upholstery, woodgrain dash and moldings and Deluxe banjo steering wheel. The Folkstone Gray coupe is equipped with the correct 221 flathead, which generates 85 HP and 155 lb-ft torque with its 6.15:1 compression and downdraft carburetor followed by a floor-shift 3-speed transmission. Additional amenities include fender skirts, bumper guards, draft deflectors, dual wipers, radio with roof-mounted antenna and Ford accessory license-plate frames. Completing the classic look are wide whitewall tires mounted on wheels with trim rings and Spyder hubcaps.
