Presented in a stunning Darian Blue with a matching blue interior of wool upholstery and Wilton carpeting, this 1941 Lincoln Zephyr Coupe is one of only 1,150 Model 72 Zephyr three-window coupes produced in 1941. Having undergone a body-off restoration in 2003, it presents with magnificent beauty, the paint and brightwork offering extremely high levels of reflectivity and depth, and the interior appearing better than it did when new. Details upon details could well describe this Zephyr with the red “Lincoln” signature upon the chrome wheel covers matching delicate red detailing on the bumper guards and trunk handle. Powered by the famous 292 CI Lincoln V-12 with a 3-speed manual transmission, the Zephyr line originally sought to fill the price gap between the high-end Lincoln Model K and the Ford Deluxe, with Mercury filling the span even further. It was a marketing concept not dissimilar to Cadillac’s LaSalle or Packard’s One-Twenty with an aero-styled design that competed with Chrysler’s Airflow. Interestingly, the Zephyr proved to have a lower drag coefficient than the Chrysler, thanks to the lower beltline, more rakish windscreen and swept grille and nose treatment originally meant to mimic wooden speedboats, which were hugely popular in the era. The popularity of wood was not lost on the stylists either, as the entire dashboard was wood grain with gold trim, which highlighted the upscale nature of the Lincoln brand. Further interesting about the Zephyr, while it competed with the upscale, entry-level models such as the One-Twenty, LaSalle and Airflow, it was the only one available with a V-12 engine. The ultra-swept styling, V-12 engine and markedly restrained use of chrome embellishments largely put the Zephyr over the top with luxury buyers. This Zephyr will be sold with restoration photos, receipts, Zephyr dealership brochures and a V-12 manual.
