Driven just 29,743
believed-original miles and featuring its all-steel body, the 1937 Ford
standard coupe offered here remains in highly original condition. Indeed, when
Bruce sent his friend and confidant Jim Cashman to look at this car in Indiana,
Jim reported back that everything appeared to be in original order, but that
there were two small holes in the headliner. Undaunted, Bruce instructed Jim to
buy the car without hesitation, believing that the imperfections in the
headliner lent to the car’s authentic originality. Restyling for this model
year reflected the influence of the Lincoln Zephyr; for the first time,
headlamps were recessed into the fenders and the car featured an all-steel
roof. On Model 78s like this one, the V-shaped grille used stylized horizontal
ribbing, which was carried over in the adjacent side-opening hood vents, all
edged with chrome trim. A Ford “V8” logo is angled into the left-hand side of
the grille. Behind it was the higher-horsepower 24-stud 221 CI flathead V-8
engine rated at 85 HP. A Stromberg 97 downdraft carburetor keeps it fed, with a
floor-shifted 3-speed transmission behind it. Dramatic in its original
Washington Blue paint and beige accent striping, there are even lead seams
and patina visible on the trunk, assembly line negligence and aging not found
on restored examples. Open the doors to view the original tan mohair interior,
with its stylized steering wheel, woodgrain-design paneling and inset flat-face
gauging. The car’s classic appearance is finished with black painted steel
wheels, chrome hubcaps and trim rings, and BF Goodrich Silvertown tires.
Originality is of growing importance in today’s collector-car marketplace. The
popular coupe-type Ford V-8 models, with their legacy of performance and
stylish appeal across many decades, are certainly in that group. From a prestigious
collection with noteworthy features, this motorcar will certainly exhibit the
tastes of its next owner as well.
