Stunning in Folkstone Gray with a tan leather interior, this 1939 Ford Deluxe convertible has received a thorough restoration, resulting in an AACA Senior award in 2001, followed by an AACA Grand National Award in 2008. Retaining its all-steel body, the convertible is equipped with the iconic rumble seat, which was offered for the last time in 1939. By the end of the 1930s, Ford was updating its Deluxe model with a different front end, which would be transferred to the standard model for the next year. For 1939, the top-of-the-line Deluxe had a shorter grille, a larger hood that replaced the side panels, “paperclip” stainless-steel side trim and outboard-mounted headlights recessed in the front fenders, as opposed to their adjacency to the grille on standard models. The Deluxe model also came with the 24-stud, 221 CI flathead, which retained its 6.15:1 compression and downdraft carburetor topped by an oil-bath air cleaner for 85 HP and 155 lb-ft of torque. A larger radiator provided improved cooling. Also for 1939, Henry Ford relented on his stated preference for mechanical brakes and allowed the use of a hydraulic system for the first time, going with a Lockheed-style design. This gray convertible looks sharp with its black folding top with red edging and glass rear window, rear fender skirts and wide whitewall tires on wheels with trim rings and Spyder hubcaps. Power is supplied by the 85 HP flathead through a floor-shifted 3-speed transmission. The interior includes the Deluxe banjo steering wheel, woodgrain dash and molding, radio and Waltham gauges and clock, while the exterior incorporates a hood-mounted antenna, bumper guards, amber fog lights, draft deflectors, dual windshield wipers and Ford accessory license-plate frames.
