Framed Elite Marti Report
This 1970 GT350 is part of an
interesting footnote in Shelby Mustang history. At the end of the original
Shelby era, a number of 1969 Shelbys remained unsold heading into the 1970
model year. Instead of trying to market them as 1969 models, Ford sent the
leftover Shelbys to contracted performance shop Kar Kraft, where they were
updated into 1970 models with hood stripes, a front spoiler and new VIN. Only
789 were converted, including just 261 GT350 fastbacks like this example in
Wimbledon White with blue stripes. With 12,557 believed-original miles, the
Shelby features its matching-numbers 351 Windsor V-8 and many original
components, including the Dark Red interior, Lucas fog lamps and 5-spoke Shelby
Magstar wheels. According to its Elite Marti Report, the GT350 was shipped new
to Ed Martin Inc. in Indianapolis with a 3-speed automatic transmission, 3.25
Traction-Lok differential, power steering and power front disc brakes. Like all
1968-70 Shelbys, the GT350 was completed on the A.O. Smith assembly line in
Ionia, Michigan, where stripped-down Mustang SportsRoofs and convertibles
received their unique Shelby components. For 1969-70, the Shelbys differed
dramatically from standard Mustangs with a fiberglass nose, NACA-scooped hood,
side scoops and a spoilered rear end with sequential Thunderbird tail lights
and center-mounted exhaust port. Inside, the Deluxe Mustang interior was
enhanced with a roll bar, unique 140 MPH speedometer and a console-mounted
gauge pod for ammeter and oil pressure. Although not reflected in the final 290
HP rating, the factory 351W cast-iron intake manifold was replaced by a Shelby
aluminum version topped by an Autolite 4-barrel carburetor and
cold-air-induction air cleaner. One of just 32 Shelbys produced in Wimbledon
White with a Dark Red interior and blue side stripes for 1970, this
end-of-the-era GT350 is fitted with new Goodyear F60-15 Polyglas tires and
comes with its original build sheet.
