The Model 40 platform in
combination with the popular flathead V-8 engine enabled Ford to offer an
extensive lineup of automobiles for 1934, including this Deluxe Phaeton. Total
production numbers for the traditional convertible touring car were small in
comparison to the sporty coupe or practical tudor, and just 3,128 Deluxe
Phaeton four-passenger Ford V-8 models were produced in 1934. This all-steel
example was the recipient of an Antique Automobile Club of America National
First Prize Award and has logged approximately 19 miles since undergoing a
comprehensive restoration from x-frame to folding canvas top. Early 1932 Ford
V-8 production engine issues were well sorted out for 1933 with a revised cooling
system, stepped-up spark ignition and higher-compression pistons under aluminum
cylinder heads. In 1934, Ford relegated the Detroit Lubricator carburetor to
history in favor of a Stromberg downdraft 2-barrel carburetor that along with
an improved air-cleaner design helped the 221 CI 21-stud flathead V-8 engine
produce a factory-rated 85 HP and 150 lb-ft of torque. The engine is backed by
a sliding-gear 3-speed manual transmission with floor-mounted shift. Black
paint is accented with cream striping that echoes the top and interior colors.
Center-hinged doors allow for elegant four-passenger ingress and egress.
Stowing the folding canvas top with a glass rear window reveals a
well-appointed tan leather interior with woodgrain accents and driver-centric
gauges. An optional greyhound mascot radiator ornament presides over a
chrome-plated grille, headlamp bezels, windshield frame and guard-equipped
bumpers. Dual cowl lamps join an optional extra horn, draft deflectors and
luggage rack. The Deluxe Phaeton rides on upgraded General Jumbo chrome-finish
steel-spoke artillery wheels with black-painted rims, wide whitewall tires and
hubcaps. The matching rear-mounted spare waits in a body-color steel cover.
