Following a restyle in 1939
that carried influence from the high-end Lincoln Zephyr, the top-level 1940
Ford Deluxe Coupe was refined with sleeker lines and improved engineering
through the efforts of designer Bob Gregorie and President Edsel Ford. This
all-steel 1940 Ford Deluxe coupe displays 43,216 believed-original miles on the
beautifully inset odometer and is a well-optioned example of what many consider
the most handsome of Ford V-8 coupes. The sleek body is finished in deep black
with chrome-plated bumpers further protected with bumper guards and styled
chrome-plated end tips. Internal performance improvements from the hotter
Mercury-division V-8 engines made their way into the Ford flatheads for 1939 and
were carried through to 1940. With a 2-barrel downdraft carburetor and 6.15:1
compression ratio, the 21-stud cylinder-head-equipped V-8 was good for 85 HP at
3,800 RPM and 155 lb-ft of torque. Big engineering news for 1939-40 was the
long-awaited introduction of Lockheed hydraulic brakes to the Ford lineup. The
year 1940 also saw the arrival of all-new column-mount shifting to the 3-speed
sliding-gear transmission with single-plate dry clutch. Deluxe-level chrome
trim rings with integrated parking lamps surround the upright sealed-beam
headlamps that flank the horizontal-bar center and side grilles. Full-length
beltline brightwork leads the eye through curved fender and body lines. Design
refinement continues into the original tan mohair upholstered cabin with a
maroon and tan instrument-panel color scheme that carries onto the two-spoke
steering wheel and clock. The factory-optional radio and radio antenna are
ready for entertainment. The stylish-and-powerful Ford Deluxe Coupe rides on
painted steel drop-center wheels with chrome-plated Ford Deluxe logo hubcaps,
trim rings and blackwall tires.
