Few performance coupes of its time bore the racing pedigree
possessed by BMW’s M6 coupe. The “M” designation itself drew the line from the
company’s Motorsport division, which had been responsible for both the 1983
World Championship-winning BMW Formula 1 engine and the extraordinary 1979 M1
supercar. Debuting in Europe in 1983 as the M635CSi, the M6’s exotic inline-6
powerplant featured a slight increase in displacement over the standard 635
coupe, twin overhead cams and four valves per cylinder, and Bosch’s latest
Motronic engine management system for a 74 HP bump to 256 HP at 6,500 RPM.
Front and rear spoilers, upgraded suspension and brakes, and BBS RS wheels
complete the pricey but well-rounded M package. One of 5,835 produced from 1983
through 1989 and one of approximately 1,677 for the North American market, this
remarkably fresh red-on-white 1987 M6 coupe offers air conditioning, power
seats and a 5-speed manual transmission. This is a beautiful example driven
just 53,317 miles.
