The year 1953 was of tremendous importance and change for Ford trucks. It was the 50th anniversary of the Blue Oval’s inception and the inaugural year for the new F100 model Pickup. For the second generation of the F-series line, Ford had decided to move away from numeric classes and towards tonnage ratings for model designation and increased their emphasis on making their Pickups more than just utilitarian equipment, offering such niceties as armrests, sun visors, a dome light and even an optional automatic transmission. 1953 also turned out to the final year for the 239 CI flathead V-8 engine as 1954 saw the advent of the Y-block. These second generation Pickups, produced from 1953-1956, proved popular among the buying public and their styling has aged exceedingly well with the passage of nearly six decades as they remain popular with collectors to this day.
This first-year F100 is a charming example that is sure to illicit nostalgic sentiment. The level of restoration performed on it is astounding with an estimated 1,600 hours invested carefully and meticulously reviving it to like-original condition. Ben has echoed a sentiment shared by many in the hobby, “the finished product will be better if you start on a good foundation,” and this F100 proves the adage as the nut and bolt restoration process began on rust free body and frame. It is equipped with the original drivetrain including the 239 CI flathead V-8 engine and column-shifted 3-speed manual transmission.
The gorgeous Vermillion Red finish is accented with a White painted grille and Ford tailgate lettering. The refurbished interior features a Black leather bench seat, door panels and headliner as well as the optional Ford heater. The horn has the special and proper 50th Anniversary script surrounding the classic Ford Lightning Bolt crest. At the rear of the truck, the bed wood has been refinished and complemented with polished strips that yield a rich shine. This charming first-year F100 from Ben and Karen’s collection rides on color-matched wheels adorned with bright hubcaps and wrapped in Coker bias ply tires.
