Ample power is delivered by a 1941-vintage 248 CI Buick “Valve in Head” OHV inline 8-cylinder engine, which was balanced, blueprinted and equipped with a reground camshaft, custom Ross Racing pistons and Pertronix ignition. Buick’s optional Compound Carburetion intake system delivers the fuel-air mix with dual carburetors, progressive throttle linkage and period Edmunds Custom air cleaners. Split 1941-vintage exhaust manifolds feed a low-restriction exhaust system equipped with Flowmaster Hushpower mufflers and a Duesenberg-style radiused outlet. Riding on an original frame with Buick’s A-arm independent front suspension, the Special delivers the power via a 3-speed manual transmission to a 1955 Buick torque-tube driveline. Supporting features include a 12-volt electrical system with a new cloth wiring harness. Guide Super Ray driving lights are mounted to the split front bumpers and a large central “Stop” lamp graces the rear bumper.
The interior is artwork in itself, featuring Australian lacewood veneers on the dash, window moldings and trunk, plus custom leather and mohair upholstery using 1939-vintage cloisonné trunk emblems as upholstery buttons. A restored Donaldson steering wheel and engine-turned switch/rally clock panel are other interesting updates. The Special features an aggressive stance with a set of 18-inch Firestone bias-ply tires on custom wire wheels equipped with Packard hubs and Borrani lip lacing. A wonderful vintage-style restoration and custom build with exceptional details and quality, this 1938 Buick Special remains true to its heritage and will provide an exciting experience with every drive.
