In 1934, Chrysler Corporation shocked the automotive world with its all-new, radically streamlined Airflow model lines featuring extremely strong and safe, all-steel unit-body construction. A design far ahead of its time, the Airflow featured wonderful Art Deco-inspired styling cues including built-in headlamps and a flowing “waterfall” grille up front, plus an extended-length hood, modified V-shaped windshield and fully skirted rear fenders. Passenger comfort was excellent with wide, comfortable seats placed fully inside the car’s wheelbase. Extra-long leaf springs enhanced the Airflow’s low ground clearance, delivering remarkable ease of entry and exit for occupants. Lockheed 4-wheel hydraulic brakes delivered industry-leading stopping power.
However, despite the many virtues offered by the new Airflow models, wary Great Depression-era buyers failed to respond in the numbers Chrysler anticipated, hastening the demise of the true original Airflow design after 1936. However, today’s collectors deeply appreciate the many contributions made by the Airflow’s designers and engineers to the automobile, and these rare cars are now highly sought-after.
Benefiting from an exquisite, national award-winning restoration, this 1936 Chrysler Airflow is one of only 110 examples of the C9 Coupe built. Formerly owned by noted Airflow figures Chuck Cochran, Joseph Klim and Chris Sacko, this example carries known provenance since 1958. A detailed concours-level restoration was performed during the early 2000s, more recently elevated during 2016–17.
Awards and honors are many, including AACA National First Place Junior, Senior and Grand National awards, plus the AACA SE Region President's Cup. This Airflow was also displayed at the Hilton Head Island Concours d’Elegance in 2018, and again in 2021, when it earned the esteemed Palmetto Award. It was also exhibited at the 2019 Gasparilla Concours d’Elegance in Tampa, Florida, winning Best in Class, followed by Best of Show at the 2022 Airflow Club of America National meet and First in Class honors at the 2022 Chattanooga Motorcar Festival. Powered by a 323 CI inline 8-cylinder engine paired with a 3-speed manual transmission with overdrive, this extremely rare, multiple-concours winner is accompanied by photos, maintenance and exhibition notes, as well as a copy of its build card.
