Ford’s short-lived Deluxe model line concluded in 1940, a year some have considered to be the pinnacle of the company’s stylish prewar era. The Deluxe version fit into the mid-priced market during Ford’s first year of this epochal decade, with quality standard equipment and excellent styling; later versions from Dearborn would use the nameplate, but by then it had become part of the regular Ford line. The 1940 Deluxe featured a widened grille design that utilized horizontal ribbing, and the chrome cursive lettering denoting the model itself was now located at the trailing edge of the hood on each side. A single chrome strip followed the upper body line, with swelling fenders and flowing body lines. This design was a favorite of an entire generation of Hot Rodders and circle-track runners, so the cars are not overly common in as-built form today. This example, a 5-window coupe with its all-steel body and split windshield, has been refreshed throughout. In fact, it showcases the Deluxe features well enough to be awarded AACA Senior honors in 2009, and the car has been driven only 2 miles since its completion. Of course, Ford’s legendary V-8 was a part of that attraction; the car features the 24-stud 221 CI 90 HP flathead V-8 engine with its 6.15:1 compression and 155 lb-ft of torque. Detailed and topped with the OEM downdraft carburetor and oil-bath air cleaner, the engine is backed by a 3-speed transmission. Covered in deep black paint, this vehicle was further equipped with the Deluxe tan leather interior, which also featured that year’s restyled inset gauge panel and dash. Options were the clock, radio and vanity mirror. Chrome bumpers are further augmented with extra-cost guards and tips, and the car rides on color-matched steel wheels with Ford Deluxe hubcaps and trim rings. Blackwall tires complete the appearance. Decades later, the prewar V-8 era of the Ford Deluxe line lives on through this final-year Deluxe coupe.

Deluxe was a term that gained popularity as the 1930s continued, and it would be difficult to define a more exacting representation of it than the all-steel car offered here. The final year of Ford’s legendary rumble seat—as well as the first one for hydraulic braking on this model line—this convertible coupe is refreshed to exacting standards and features fewer than 10 miles since being brought to its present condition. Ford offered the separate “Deluxe” model line for only three years, 1938-40, later applying the title to standard-design Fords as prewar automobile production was curtailed for more pressing military commitments. Deluxe designs in 1939 featured the chrome vertically slated grille accented by a V-shape outline and a “V8” callout extending toward the hood’s dramatic center pinch. Deck- and fender-stamping lines further accented the appearance of forward motion even at curbside, whether the top was on or not. Power is not lacking, with the 221-inch 90 HP flathead V-8 engine showcased under the hood. In an era when straight-6 and 8-cylinder designs dominated similarly priced competitors, 6.15:1 compression fed though the downdraft-design carburetor made this convertible a highway-to-beach cruiser. It is backed by Ford’s 3-speed transmission and floor-shift option. Painted jet black as Henry Ford intended, the car has a matching-black folding top with glass rear window and complementary tan leather upholstery. The woodgrain accents on the dash and moldings continue the Deluxe theme, with its banjo-type steering wheel, in-dash Waltham gauges and clock, and radio and antenna. Optioned with the rumble seat, other exterior equipment includes the fender skirts, bumper guards, amber fog lamps, draft deflectors, dual wipers, wide whitewall tires and Ford accessory license-plate frames featuring 1939 North Carolina plates. Chrome wheels and Deluxe hubcaps crown this wonderful example of Ford’s late prewar V-8 era.

With this 1934 Ford coupe, you can step back into time to relive the era of Bonnie and Clyde. Notoriously, depression-era outlaws Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow stole a 1934 Ford sedan before they were gunned down in a police ambush in May 1934. And although this car is a 5-window coupe and not a sedan, it carries the style and power that inspired Clyde to pen a letter to Henry Ford praising the Ford V-8 for its “sustained speed and freedom from trouble.” In subsequent decades, the 1934 Ford has become known as a Street Rodder favorite, but here’s a 5-window coupe that has escaped the popular chopped-top and engine-swap modifications, making it a rare original. All-steel and driven only 45 miles since a comprehensive restoration, the coupe earned the AACA National First Prize in 2004. Black with yellow accent striping and a tan mohair interior, the classic 5-window features suicide doors, woodgrain interior trim, a rear-mounted spare tire in a metal case and chrome bumpers, grille and headlight bezels. Wheels are black painted wires with chrome “V8” hubcaps and Goodyear “piecrust” blackwall tires. Power comes from a correct 85 HP, 21-stud 221 CI flathead V-8 connected to a floor-shifted 3-speed transmission. The 1934 Ford was the third model year following the major revision of 1932, the year the Model A was replaced and the Ford’s flathead V-8 was introduced. After even more big changes for 1933, the 1934 model updates were not as substantial and mostly cosmetic, including a flatter grille, straight hood louvers, smaller headlights and a new logo. Horsepower from the 221 CI flathead, which was standard for the coupe, jumped to 85 from the previous year’s 75 thanks in part to a new downdraft Stromberg carburetor.
