With this 1934 Ford coupe, you
can step back into time to relive the era of Bonnie and Clyde. Notoriously,
depression-era outlaws Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow stole a 1934 Ford sedan
before they were gunned down in a police ambush in May 1934. And although this
car is a 5-window coupe and not a sedan, it carries the style and power that
inspired Clyde to pen a letter to Henry Ford praising the Ford V-8 for its
“sustained speed and freedom from trouble.” In subsequent decades, the 1934
Ford has become known as a Street Rodder favorite, but here’s a 5-window coupe
that has escaped the popular chopped-top and engine-swap modifications, making
it a rare original. All-steel and driven only 45 miles since a comprehensive
restoration, the coupe earned the AACA National First Prize in 2004. Black with
yellow accent striping and a tan mohair interior, the classic 5-window features
suicide doors, woodgrain interior trim, a rear-mounted spare tire in a metal
case and chrome bumpers, grille and headlight bezels. Wheels are black painted
wires with chrome “V8” hubcaps and Goodyear “piecrust” blackwall tires. Power
comes from a correct 85 HP, 21-stud 221 CI flathead V-8 connected to a
floor-shifted 3-speed transmission. The 1934 Ford was the third model year
following the major revision of 1932, the year the Model A was replaced and the
Ford’s flathead V-8 was introduced. After even more big changes for 1933, the
1934 model updates were not as substantial and mostly cosmetic, including a
flatter grille, straight hood louvers, smaller headlights and a new logo.
Horsepower from the 221 CI flathead, which was standard for the coupe, jumped
to 85 from the previous year’s 75 thanks in part to a new downdraft Stromberg
carburetor.
