Deluxe was a term that gained
popularity as the 1930s continued, and it would be difficult to define a more
exacting representation of it than the all-steel car offered here. The final
year of Ford’s legendary rumble seat—as well as the first one for hydraulic
braking on this model line—this convertible coupe is refreshed to exacting
standards and features fewer than 10 miles since being brought to its present
condition. Ford offered the separate “Deluxe” model line for only three years,
1938-40, later applying the title to standard-design Fords as prewar automobile
production was curtailed for more pressing military commitments. Deluxe designs
in 1939 featured the chrome vertically slated grille accented by a V-shape
outline and a “V8” callout extending toward the hood’s dramatic center pinch.
Deck- and fender-stamping lines further accented the appearance of forward
motion even at curbside, whether the top was on or not. Power is not lacking,
with the 221-inch 90 HP flathead V-8 engine showcased under the hood. In an era
when straight-6 and 8-cylinder designs dominated similarly priced competitors,
6.15:1 compression fed though the downdraft-design carburetor made this
convertible a highway-to-beach cruiser. It is backed by Ford’s 3-speed
transmission and floor-shift option. Painted jet black as Henry Ford intended,
the car has a matching-black folding top with glass rear window and
complementary tan leather upholstery. The woodgrain accents on the dash and
moldings continue the Deluxe theme, with its banjo-type steering wheel, in-dash
Waltham gauges and clock, and radio and antenna. Optioned with the rumble seat,
other exterior equipment includes the fender skirts, bumper guards, amber fog
lamps, draft deflectors, dual wipers, wide whitewall tires and Ford accessory
license-plate frames featuring 1939 North Carolina plates. Chrome wheels and
Deluxe hubcaps crown this wonderful example of Ford’s late prewar V-8 era.
