Ford’s short-lived Deluxe model line concluded in 1940, a year some have considered to be the pinnacle of the company’s stylish prewar era. The Deluxe version fit into the mid-priced market during Ford’s first year of this epochal decade, with quality standard equipment and excellent styling; later versions from Dearborn would use the nameplate, but by then it had become part of the regular Ford line. The 1940 Deluxe featured a widened grille design that utilized horizontal ribbing, and the chrome cursive lettering denoting the model itself was now located at the trailing edge of the hood on each side. A single chrome strip followed the upper body line, with swelling fenders and flowing body lines. This design was a favorite of an entire generation of Hot Rodders and circle-track runners, so the cars are not overly common in as-built form today. This example, a 5-window coupe with its all-steel body and split windshield, has been refreshed throughout. In fact, it showcases the Deluxe features well enough to be awarded AACA Senior honors in 2009, and the car has been driven only 2 miles since its completion. Of course, Ford’s legendary V-8 was a part of that attraction; the car features the 24-stud 221 CI 90 HP flathead V-8 engine with its 6.15:1 compression and 155 lb-ft of torque. Detailed and topped with the OEM downdraft carburetor and oil-bath air cleaner, the engine is backed by a 3-speed transmission. Covered in deep black paint, this vehicle was further equipped with the Deluxe tan leather interior, which also featured that year’s restyled inset gauge panel and dash. Options were the clock, radio and vanity mirror. Chrome bumpers are further augmented with extra-cost guards and tips, and the car rides on color-matched steel wheels with Ford Deluxe hubcaps and trim rings. Blackwall tires complete the appearance. Decades later, the prewar V-8 era of the Ford Deluxe line lives on through this final-year Deluxe coupe.
