The year was 1939, and as the winds of war again blew across Europe, America’s economy roared into action. The new car market was no different, and Ford had created a separate Deluxe body line in 1938 to offer a more refined automobile between the standard Ford and upscale Lincoln lines. This gorgeous coupe was one of those Deluxe models. A high-demand example with its all-steel body, this 2-door, 5-window coupe was honored with an AACA Senior award in 2003, and it has been driven a mere 8 miles since its comprehensive restoration. Painted an attractive Dartmouth Green, the sculpted ‘39 Deluxe body was beautifully stylized with chrome trim, immediately reminiscent of the Art Deco movement. This was the first year Ford offered hydraulic brakes. The grille featured a V-shape layout with vertical bars, while additional horizontal cues accented the body lines themselves. Fender skirts and the extra-cost wide whitewall tires complete the late 1930s dynamic. Power comes from a 24-stud 221 CI flathead V-8 engine, rated at 85 HP and 155 lb-ft of torque in 1939, well-capable of pushing the car to speeds in the triple digits using its 6.15:1 compression. Atop the 90-degree engine is a downdraft carburetor and Ford oil-bath air cleaner, a floor-shifted 3-speed transmission backing it up. Blending with the darker green exterior is tan leather upholstery inside, featuring the Deluxe banjo steering wheel, woodgrain dash and moldings, plus a radio and antenna. Other exterior options were the bumper guards, draft deflectors, dual windshield wipers and even a Ford dealer accessory license-plate frame. From the whitewall tires to its Zephyr-inspired grille treatment, this car exudes the essence of Detroit’s working man in the age preceding the infamy of Pearl Harbor. Of the near-half-million cars from Ford that year, only 37,000 were of this design, and most of those remaining today will pale in comparison to the beautiful AACA-winning automobile offered here.

Following a restyle in 1939 that carried influence from the high-end Lincoln Zephyr, the top-level 1940 Ford Deluxe Coupe was refined with sleeker lines and improved engineering through the efforts of designer Bob Gregorie and President Edsel Ford. This all-steel 1940 Ford Deluxe coupe displays 43,216 believed-original miles on the beautifully inset odometer and is a well-optioned example of what many consider the most handsome of Ford V-8 coupes. The sleek body is finished in deep black with chrome-plated bumpers further protected with bumper guards and styled chrome-plated end tips. Internal performance improvements from the hotter Mercury-division V-8 engines made their way into the Ford flatheads for 1939 and were carried through to 1940. With a 2-barrel downdraft carburetor and 6.15:1 compression ratio, the 21-stud cylinder-head-equipped V-8 was good for 85 HP at 3,800 RPM and 155 lb-ft of torque. Big engineering news for 1939-40 was the long-awaited introduction of Lockheed hydraulic brakes to the Ford lineup. The year 1940 also saw the arrival of all-new column-mount shifting to the 3-speed sliding-gear transmission with single-plate dry clutch. Deluxe-level chrome trim rings with integrated parking lamps surround the upright sealed-beam headlamps that flank the horizontal-bar center and side grilles. Full-length beltline brightwork leads the eye through curved fender and body lines. Design refinement continues into the original tan mohair upholstered cabin with a maroon and tan instrument-panel color scheme that carries onto the two-spoke steering wheel and clock. The factory-optional radio and radio antenna are ready for entertainment. The stylish-and-powerful Ford Deluxe Coupe rides on painted steel drop-center wheels with chrome-plated Ford Deluxe logo hubcaps, trim rings and blackwall tires.

One of several fine award-winning examples from the Bruce Church Collection, this 1932 Packard Eight 902 Coupe qualifies as a Classic Car Club of America Full Classic and was decorated with the Antique Automobile Club of America’s Senior Award in 2008. After Bruce Church acquired this beautiful rare classic-era Packard from the estate of a previous owner, he performed a comprehensive frame-off restoration that still remains in exceptional condition today. Sleeker and more streamlined than its 1930-31 predecessors, the 1932 Packard Eight featured recontoured window openings, a gently sloped-back windshield that eliminated interior glare and reflections, extended front-fender arches, recontoured beltline moldings and vent doors in place of the earlier models’ louvered-side engine covers. This 902 Coupe’s exquisite lines are beautifully emphasized by its bold combination of Metallic Maroon and silver paint with maroon pinstripe accents. Glittering chromed wire wheels wearing wide whitewall tires add even more elegance to the car, which also displays magnificent chrome and brightwork throughout. The car is well dressed in the manner typical of the Packards of this era, complementing the signature Packard radiator shell with a “Goddess of Speed” hood mascot, twin chromed horns and fender lamps and highly desirable Pilot-Ray articulated safety lights that turn in synchronization with the front steering. Dual side-mount spare tires on chromed wire wheels are mounted in silver-painted metal cases topped with chromed accessory mirrors. The 1932 Packard Ninth Series mechanical highlights include the outstanding 320/110 inline 8-cylinder engine with synchromesh 3-speed manual transmission, automatic chassis self-lubrication system, ride-control shock absorbers and the unique vibration-absorbing harmonic stabilizers designed by Packard’s Chief Experimental Engineer Clyde R. Paton to eliminate high-speed shimmy. This Packard Eight’s interior matches the show-winning exterior in its superb fit and materials, offering newer red leather and carpeting, both inside and in the rumble-seat area, and brilliantly finished burled-wood trim and brightwork.

Not only does this 1940 Ford Standard Coupe retain its original all-steel body, it has also traveled just a mere 16,469 believed-original miles, as attested to by its Antique Automobile Club of America’s award for Historical Preservation of Original Features. The seller states the car had been purchased new by a soldier while in basic training, who was later killed in action in World War II. His mother kept the car in storage for years before selling it to a Ford Dealership for use as a promotional display vehicle; the dealer later sold it to collector Bruce Church. While lacking some of the mechanical advances of their competitors, late-30s Ford styling was arguably more successful, and the Fords designed by E.T. “Bob” Gregorie for the 1940 model year were by far the best looking ever, so much so that they have long been considered classics of the era. Along with the rest of the industry, Ford introduced sealed-beam headlights, which were mounted in teardrop-shaped bezels integrated into curvaceously sculpted fenders formed to complement the new car’s equally pleasing body. Identified by its vertical-bar grille and minimalist trim, this 1940 Ford Standard Coupe enjoys the added style of optional chromed front and rear bumpers with end wings and bumper guards, dual windshield wipers and full-size chromed V-8 wheel covers with outer trim rings. Enthusiasts will especially appreciate the blackwall tires carrying molded-in Ford logos. Introduced in 1938, this car’s 24-stud flathead V-8 engine was designed with a 6.15:1 compression ratio and Ford 2-barrel downdraft carburetor for the same ratings of 85 HP and 155 lb-ft of torque as the 1939 models, and is mated to a column-shifted 3-speed manual transmission. Smart-looking black paint is matched with the original tan mohair interior incorporating a well-designed instrument cluster and the Bakelite switchgear that was so popular in the era. This is a clean, well-preserved presentation of a highly original “Forty Ford.”

The Model 40 platform in combination with the popular flathead V-8 engine enabled Ford to offer an extensive lineup of automobiles for 1934, including this Deluxe Phaeton. Total production numbers for the traditional convertible touring car were small in comparison to the sporty coupe or practical tudor, and just 3,128 Deluxe Phaeton four-passenger Ford V-8 models were produced in 1934. This all-steel example was the recipient of an Antique Automobile Club of America National First Prize Award and has logged approximately 19 miles since undergoing a comprehensive restoration from x-frame to folding canvas top. Early 1932 Ford V-8 production engine issues were well sorted out for 1933 with a revised cooling system, stepped-up spark ignition and higher-compression pistons under aluminum cylinder heads. In 1934, Ford relegated the Detroit Lubricator carburetor to history in favor of a Stromberg downdraft 2-barrel carburetor that along with an improved air-cleaner design helped the 221 CI 21-stud flathead V-8 engine produce a factory-rated 85 HP and 150 lb-ft of torque. The engine is backed by a sliding-gear 3-speed manual transmission with floor-mounted shift. Black paint is accented with cream striping that echoes the top and interior colors. Center-hinged doors allow for elegant four-passenger ingress and egress. Stowing the folding canvas top with a glass rear window reveals a well-appointed tan leather interior with woodgrain accents and driver-centric gauges. An optional greyhound mascot radiator ornament presides over a chrome-plated grille, headlamp bezels, windshield frame and guard-equipped bumpers. Dual cowl lamps join an optional extra horn, draft deflectors and luggage rack. The Deluxe Phaeton rides on upgraded General Jumbo chrome-finish steel-spoke artillery wheels with black-painted rims, wide whitewall tires and hubcaps. The matching rear-mounted spare waits in a body-color steel cover.
