A one-owner example driven just 29,990 miles since new, this amazing 1966 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible remains unrestored and in astonishing, reference-quality condition, retaining its original Rally Red paint, black leather interior, white soft top, chrome and stainless trim. The original matching-numbers L72 427/425 HP Mark IV big-block V-8 engine is also retained, along with the car’s Muncie M21 close ratio 4-speed manual transmission and 4.11:1 Positraction rear end. By 1966, the change from fuel-injected small-blocks to Mark IV big-block power at the top of Corvette’s engine lineup was complete. Two versions of the bored-out 427 were offered: the hydraulic-cam L36 rated at 390 HP, and the L78, which was deceptively rated at the same 425 HP as the 396 CI version it replaced. The difference was in rating peak power at just 5,600 RPM; when taken past 6,000 RPM to its 6,500 redline, the new 427 produced well in excess of 500 HP, while peak torque was increased to a towering 460 lb-ft at 4,000 RPM. Purchased new from Jim White Chevrolet in Toledo, Ohio, on March 24, 1966, this 1966 Corvette convertible shows in every detail the high level of preservation resulting from having been carefully stored in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, since 1982. In addition to its incredibly original condition, it is commended by a generous list of options that includes F41 special heavy-duty suspension, power disc brakes, K66 transistorized ignition, power windows and antenna, a Teakwood steering wheel, AM/FM radio, Soft Ray-tinted glass and Kelsey Hayes finned aluminum knock-off wheels. Offered with most all factory-correct type components—including the spare tire, jack, jack tools, original keys, seat belts, washer system, shifter, shielding, braided wires, air cleaner, alternator, spark plug shields, hoses, hose clamps, window glass, valve covers, ball joints, gas door assembly, Bowtie mirror and glovebox door—it is documented with the dealer invoice, order form, Protect-O-Plate and Al Grenning engine affirmation.
