Hard to find high performance car from the late 1950s big fin era
They called it the Forward Look, and this big-fin Plymouth Belvedere hardtop from the final years of the 1950s lives up to that title. Boasting a well-preserved older restoration, this special car from 1959 highlights one of the most impressive styling packages of that decade. Moreover, this Belvedere model is in a deluxe form with excellent appointments. Underneath the hood here is the early series 318 A-engine, in this instance upgraded with the era’s previously utilized V-800 dual 4-barrel intake and carburetors complete with twin air cleaners from 1957, paired with dual exhaust and backed by the pushbutton automatic transmission. Of course, the car rides on the excellent Torsion-Aire suspension as well. Inside is also upscale, as it features the scarcely seen swivel bucket seats, covered in a refined gray-and-white interior upholstery. An additional refinement here is the AM radio visible in the dash, but a more modern Pioneer CD player tucked under the dash with additional auxiliary gauges. A tinted windshield, dual rear antennas and the simulated spare tire stamped into the trunk lid all help add to this car’s era-specific appeal. A set of rear bumper guards help enhance the styling revisions for the ’59 model. This car is painted in beige with chrome side-spear and lower rocker trim, Flite-Swept tailfins, the cubist grille design and twin-brow headlamps. Riding on 14-inch wheels, the full-size wheel covers come to a centered point and bias-ply 8.00x14 wide whitewall tires complete the look and feel of driving a car from the time period. With a color combination of beige with a gray and white interior, this version represents what would have been the fresh visual appearance of the time. With hard-to-find high-performance components from the late 1950s big-fin era as a bonus, this could be a great candidate for those who have desired to have one of Virgil Exner’s legendary designs to call their own.
