V is for Victory, but it also means something special to Mopar
aficionados who pay attention to that fifth digit in the VIN tag. Cars like
this example, one of 852 V-Code automatic Cuda hardtops produced in 1970, got a
V when the factory planted the hot 440 6-BBL engine down between the front
fenders. That this highly optioned car features not only that but very rare
factory-correct TX9 Black Velvet paint coupled to red hockey stripes and a
black leather interior makes it an exceptional standout. Of course, under the
scalloped sport hood is the 390 HP 440 6-BBL V-8 engine with dual exhaust from
cast-iron manifolds, an open-element air cleaner, Chrysler electronic ignition
and power brake booster. Born for the nightlife, it is backed by the
TorqueFlite automatic transmission and the Super Performance Axle Package,
which included the 4.10 Sure Grip Dana 60 axle, power front disc brakes and
heavy-duty cooling equipment. The Rally hood features J45 hold-down pins, while
other Cuda dress-ups like road lamps, ribbed rocker moldings, valance-exit
exhaust tips and the aforementioned 440 callout hockey stripes complete it.
Inside is also quite upscale, as the car got the leather-upholstered
high-backed bucket seats including the deluxe six-way adjustable driver seat, center
console with round-knob Slap-Stik shifter, Rallye instrument cluster with tach
and clock, radio, dual outside body-color mirrors and the rarely seen overhead
console option. Of course, Cuda identification is on both inside and outside
locations, with chrome ‘cuda 440-6 hood tags. In keeping with a refined theme,
this car wears 14-inch styled road wheels and raised white-letter Goodyear
Polyglas tires, allowing for a full-size spare with jack kits to be put in the
trunk. The Cuda as an E-body was in its inaugural year in 1970, and it proved
to be popular despite a rapidly changing marketplace. This stylish example,
combining beautiful color choices, a premium interior, careful attention to
overall appearance and V-code power to spare, would be hard to top: Victory,
indeed.
