With two Trans Am championships and record sales on its resume, the first-generation Chevrolet Camaro looked to be a hard act to follow, but Chevrolet was far from finished. Delayed by labor strike, the 1970 Camaro arrived in February of that year to rave reviews from the motoring press. Praise was universal for the all-new Camaro Z28, which was the best, most well-rounded version of that famed performance package yet. The 108-inch wheelbase remained, but the body design was new.
Available only as a two-door fastback coupe, it bore some of the most sophisticated styling ever to emerge from GM’s styling department. Because the SCCA relaxed its engine limits to allow destroking to meet the 305 CI limit on displacement, the Z28’s original 302 CI small-block was replaced with the same 350 CI LT1 engine that first appeared in the Corvette lineup. Its presence announced by the clattering of solid lifters and snarling dual exhaust, this virtually race-ready small-block V-8 incorporated 4-bolt mains, a forged steel crank and connecting rods, forged aluminum pistons, 11.0:1 compression, large valves and a Holley 780 CFM 4-barrel on an aluminum intake manifold. Likely in the interest of maintaining Corvette’s position at the top of the Chevrolet performance hierarchy, the Z28 version of the LT1 was rated at 360 HP, 10 HP fewer than the Corvette. Its real-world performance, however, was every bit as sensational, especially when backed by the Muncie 4-speed manual transmission employed by this show-stopping 1970 Camaro Z28.
Combining Daytona Yellow paint with black stripes and a black bucket-seat interior, it hits all the high points with front and rear spoilers, Goodyear Polyglas GT white-letter tires on argent 5-spoke wheels, and chromed dual exhaust tips. In addition to the Z28-spec 150 MPH speedometer and 8,000 RPM tach, the car features tinted glass, an in-dash clock, a center console with Hurst shifter, and immaculate detailing throughout.
