Propaganda

Nota sobre todos os posters de propaganda política russa/soviética que postarei nos próximos dias:
The collection of Sergo Grigorian is the result of 25 years of meticulous pursuit in search of Soviet propaganda. An ensemble of posters that encompasses the history of the Soviet Union and the messages that were projected on to society. This collection covers the period from 1917 to 1991 and most posters in the collection fall in the first half of the Soviet period. The collection currently consists of approximately 2000 pieces and is recognized as the largest private collection of Soviet political posters.
A former philatelist, Sergo discovered his first poster in London. He was enticed by the Soviet posters' attractiveness and visual impact. Over the decades of the Soviet regime, the objectives of Soviet leaders were portrayed so powerfully that they have an effect on the viewer even today. Sergei Grabovsky, in "Men of the Crowd. How Homo Soveticus was Created" noted that Lenin, Trotsky, Stalin relied on the works of Le Bonto to support their ideological concepts with practical advice on how to "manipulate the crowd...Gustave Le Bon... lay on the desks of all the above leaders, complete with underlining and dog-eared pages". The leaders followed Le Bon's philosophy and recognized the importance and effectiveness of artistic images on the mind. This is why Soviet posters have been, and are still, unforgettable and powerful and effective forms of communication.
The Bolsheviks had taken over in 1917 and Revolution had shaken the empire. These hardline revolutionaries, led by Lenin, found ways to disseminate their political message to the masses, and posters were one of the best means, especially as sixty percent of the population was illiterate (pre-revolution. Many initiatives were publicised during the Soviet period and the extensive campaigns led the promotion of the five-year plans, educating the people about the drive towards a collective and socialism, promoting the personality cults of Lenin and Stalin and inspiring people about the war effort and conveying the utopian society at the end of the socialist struggle against the rest of the capitalist world. The art of poster making transformed raw ideology into fuel in the form of images for the general Soviet public.
Poster art was widely accessible to the masses and the images depicted were easily understood by everyone. A short and energetic accompanying slogan stuck in the viewers' mind as a constant call for action. Pioneering avant-garde artists created bold and experimental designs that occupied the public space. The posters were positioned everywhere: construction sites, collective farm fields, on trains and all forms of transport. This selection of posters from the golden era of propaganda art has come to Bonhams from Sergo Grigorian's Trading Fund and are presented to the public to raise awareness of the increased popularity in soviet propaganda. These posters create a chronicled timeline of the Soviet Union's creation and evolution. Countless key events in the life of the Soviet people are reflected in these socialist agitprop posters.
