The Explorer trim was first introduced on the F-Series Ford pickups for the 1968 model year, ceasing availability at the end of the 1986 model year. Each year, the Explorer trim was different than the last, and production of Explorer F-Series trucks was always limited. For all intents and purposes, the Explorer trim was a kind of luxury-sport trim offered at a lower price point than the more upscale Ranger and Ranger XLT models. Through the years, the Explorer package was offered with a number of sub packages, each building upon the other with more accessories and even special colors and upholstery patterns. The idea in a nutshell was to discount popular options to drive sales while not circumventing the more upscale packages.
This 1986 F150 XLT Explorer is unrestored and has traveled just 881 miles. Always stored indoors, the short bed truck has had two owners and features a 5.0L V-8 engine, automatic transmission and Positraction rear end. Presented in the original black paint, it has been metered to ensure originality, and it’s dressed with dual chrome mirrors, chrome bed rails, the illumination package including the cargo light, chrome grille and headlight surrounds, bright beltline strip, and front and rear chrome bumpers with the front featuring bumper guards and the rear featuring a step.
The Deluxe interior is upholstered with Dark Red cloth and features the wood-grain applique, a sliding rear window, tinted glass, air conditioning, an AM/FM stereo, power brakes with front discs and power steering. Rolling on the Rally Red ring wheels with Firestone tires, this F150 Explorer is one of the last of the original Explorers built and will be sold with the inspection papers, owner’s manual, maintenance log book, Ford and Firestone warranty booklets, North Carolina registration and inspection sheets from the 1980s, and a North Carolina inspection sticker from 1990 showing the mileage at 649 miles.
