Four years after its
introduction in 1992, Dodge revitalized its performance flagship Viper by
adding a brand-new GTS coupe. If the original was purposely designed to invoke
memories of the Shelby 427 Cobra, the GTS recalled the world-champion Shelby
Daytona in no uncertain terms. Its arching double-bubble fastback roof and
cut-off Kamm tail with integrated spoiler and quick-fill fuel cap gave the GTS
an almost identical silhouette, especially as it appeared in magazine features
and advertising in the iconic Shelby American-inspired combination of Viper
Blue metallic paint with white Lemans stripes. The new GTS was the second Viper
chosen to pace the Indianapolis 500, a job for which it was perfectly suited
right out of the box. The new Viper’s chassis was torsionally stiffer and the
differential and axles stronger. Brakes and suspension were also upgraded, all
in service to maximizing the performance of the redesigned V-10 engine. New
block and head castings and a revised cooling system shaved 80 pounds, while
higher compression, recalibrated fuel injection and a redesigned exhaust system
added 50 HP for a total of 450. The GTS interior also offered improvements over
the RT/10 roadster, incorporating a new instrument panel, dual air bags, a
now-standard CD player and adjustable lumbar support in the well-bolstered
leather seats. This well-optioned 1996 Dodge Viper GTS coupe is one of
just 1,166 built in that first year of GTS production. Driven just 10,600
miles, it comes with power steering and power 4-wheel disc brakes, power
windows, air conditioning, a 6-speed manual transmission and the 17-inch
chromed wheels first seen on the 1993 GTS show car. This is a fine example of
the car that raised the standard of American performance to a whole new level.
