This Chevrolet Corvette Z06 is the 2001 high-performance version of the fifth-generation Corvette, popularly known as the C5. It pays homage to the 1963 Z06 racing-package Corvette. With only 1,265 miles on the odometer, this example has barely completed its break-in period and still looks like it just rolled off the showroom floor. One of only 5,773 models of the Z06 produced in 2001, it draws its power from a beautifully presented 5.7L/385 HP LS6 V-8 engine. This tuned and refined version of the standard LS1 engine produced higher output that made the 3,118-pound car better than any other Corvette ever produced to that time, save for the top speed of the 1990s ZR1. Following combustion, all the burned fossil fuel would exit through titanium exhaust tubing that led to four chromed exhaust finishers at center-rear. As designed, it was offered exclusively with a 6-speed manual transmission and handled like a dream. Thanks to the Z06’s lighter weight, a new, revised FE4 Suspension was called for to keep it planted. Active handling controlled most of the chassis geometry, which became necessary thanks to the structurally rigid Fixed Roof Coupe hardtop design. This Torch Red Z06 Corvette was fronted by its stainless-mesh fascia and functional rear-brake cooling ducts with red brake calipers, and it looks as serious as a heart attack. But climb inside and one finds dual-zone climate control, a Bose audio system, cruise control and loads of power options—all of the comforts one could want. This Z06 was the quickest factory Corvette available in 2001, and it still rates as a fast car even by today’s lofty standards. The C5 Z06 comfortably owns a very desirable piece of Corvette history as it revived a Corvette performance package that had laid dormant since 1963.
