From the sidewalk, this 1940
Ford looks pretty much as Ford intended it to. Maroon paint coats a steel body
that is brightened up with all the right chrome trim, and the tan-painted steel
wheels don’t seem out of place, especially with the wide whitewall tires,
chrome trim rings and hubcaps; it gives the impression that it’s all FoMoCo.
But looking closer, the slight rake of the front end becomes apparent and the
glass seems slightly tinted from stock. The headlights are of the halogen
design and the tail lights are from the school of LED. Then it fires up, which
is when it becomes apparent that all bets concerning a factory restoration are
off. The LS V-8 engine is packing a Wilson manifold, JDM Sport Nation fuel
rails and a Spectre cold-air intake among other nice tricks lending it more
power than Ford ever thought a ’40 Ford would ever know. A 4L60E overdrive
automatic transmission works with a Ford 9-inch rear end to distribute the
power, while an independent front suspension, power steering and 4-wheel disc
brakes all conspire to make the Ford infinitely easier and more enjoyable to
drive. The engine bay has been color matched to the body and the firewall has
been smoothed over, all of which creates a fastidiously clean, uncluttered
environment that anyone can appreciate. The interior is a study in subtle
custom flair with tan leather upholstery, bucket seats, a custom center console
with a Pioneer stereo, Vintage Air, Classic Instruments gauges and a tilt
steering column topped with a banjo-style steering wheel complete with a V-8
horn button. With the modern drivetrain and air-conditioned interior, this Ford
is ready to rock the scene—and thanks to an aluminum radiator, it’ll be hard
pressed to overheat too, even on warm days in traffic.
