The brainchild of American importer Max Hoffman, the SL series of Mercedes-Benz was launched in 1954 as a line of grand-touring automobiles that combined Mercedes-Benz racing technology and performance with all the luxury appointments that enthusiasts of the marque had come to expect. This breathtaking performance is aided by the sixth-generation SLs being the first to have their body shells constructed entirely of aluminum, resulting in a 250-pound weight savings over the previous iteration.
