A two-time winner of GS Nationals Concours Gold and awarded
Best of Show at Hemmings Musclepalooza, this 1970 Buick GSX is documented as
the 144th of only 678 Buick GSX models produced that year. Like other Buicks of
the 1960s, the GS was overshadowed by its intermediate competitors at
Chevrolet, Pontiac and Oldsmobile. But, Buick planted the seed for its greatest
performance car in 1967, when the Division replaced the Nailhead V-8 it
introduced in 1953 with a new, larger V-8 with plenty of room in its
architecture for expansion. Displacing 430 CI in full-size Buicks and the
Riviera, the new V-8 was sleeved down to 400 CI for its intermediates, but when
GM dropped the restriction on displacement in its intermediates, Buick
engineers unleashed the hounds, boring the 430 out to a full 455 CI and
dropping it into the freshly restyled GS. The resulting ram-air-fed GS 455
boasted 350 HP at 4,600 RPM and a monstrous 510 lb-ft of torque, one of the
highest ratings of any production engine. An optional Stage 1 455 raised output
to 360 HP using a hotter cam, larger valves and a recalibrated carburetor.
Buick then unveiled the GSX performance option, available only in Apollo White
or Saturn Yellow and featuring front and rear spoilers, contrasting body-side
and hood stripes, extra-wide Goodyear Polyglas GT tires on chromed Rallye
wheels, hood tach and heavy-duty Rallye Ride Control suspension. One of just 81
produced with a 4-speed manual transmission, this rare 1970 GSX was the
recipient of a comprehensive nut-and-bolt restoration to concours-winning
condition. Its 455 CI ram-air V-8 was rebuilt to Stage 1 specifications, and it
connects through the 4-speed to a 3.42:1 rear end. Finished in brilliant Saturn
Yellow with a black interior, its great complement of optional extras includes
power steering and front disc brakes, power windows, a sport steering wheel on
a tilt column, center console and AM/FM radio.
