One of the most storied names in Formula 1 racing, McLaren Automotive shattered the supercar paradigm in 1998 with the sensational F1 of 1992-98, and then did it again with the 2009 announcement of the MP4-12C that entered production in 2011. Like its F1 machines, McLaren designed the 12C without compromise, strictly according to its mission as a pure expression of road-going performance. At its core is its sophisticated carbon-fiber MonoCell tub that takes advantage of McLaren’s unrivaled knowledge and experience with that material. Aesthetically beautiful and highly effective, the 12C’s flowing bodywork is an aerodynamic wonder, mastering air flow over and through to effect maximum dynamic balance while directing cooling air to all the right places, most importantly the brilliantly packaged 3.8L twin-turbocharged all-alloy V-8 visible beneath the see-through rear cover. Rated at 592 HP at 7,000 RPM and 443 lb-ft of torque at 3,000 RPM, it mates to McLaren’s own 7-speed paddle-shifted Seamless Shift automatic transmission. Suspension is a pairing of traditional hardware—upper and lower A-arms, coil springs and hydraulically linked shocks—and innovations that include Proactive Chassis Control (McLaren calls it “the most radical rethink of sports car suspension design in half a century”), which provides a supple ride when cruising but eliminates body roll through the corners. At speed, Brake Steer (a system so good it was banned from F1) manages traction to produce amazing cornering trajectories at speed, augmented by the active rear spoiler that also acts as an air brake. Pirelli P-Zero tires on 10-spoke super lightweight wheels and highly effective carbon-ceramic disc brakes translate all that high tech into astounding performance. Fresh from a seventh annual maintenance completed in August 2019 by McLaren Philadelphia, this 2012 MP4-12C announces its lineage in Heritage McLaren Orange against a matching McLaren Orange and Carbon Black leather interior. At 11,533 miles, it features the optional Stealth Pack rear trim package, GT3-style rear bumper applique and Iris 2.0 infotainment upgrade.
