In 1970, the
new Hemi Cuda was a big deal. In fact, the folks at Plymouth churned out 368
Hemi Cudas that model year equipped with automatic transmissions. If you have
never seen one painted in Alpine White with a black top and matched black
interior, it’s because this is actually a unique muscle car package considering
all of the crazy Hi-Impact colors that could be had that year. The E-body
platform was one of the final new designs to emerge from the American supercar
era, with Dodge’s Challenger R/T and the Plymouth Cuda being the only two
variations allowing installation of the notorious 426 CI V-8 Hemi engine. By
1970, the switch to hydraulic lifters had made the former NASCAR fire-breather
a little more civilized, but it was still equipped as standard with dual
4-barrel carburetors, high-flow heads, 10.25 compression and a serious
reciprocating assembly. The Hemi here is backed by both the TorqueFlite
automatic transmission and the Dana 60 9.75 4.10-geared Sure Grip differential
offered as part of the A32 Super Performance Axle Package. This car has power
steering, power brakes, heavy-duty cooling components and factory
Hemi-engineered suspension equipment. Finished in its chromatic white-and-black
scheme, the argent-tone Shaker comes through the hood featuring hold-down pins,
and this car also has a white elastomeric front bumper, road lamps, exhaust
tips, dual chrome mirrors and black HEMI hockey-stripe graphics. Inside, one
finds high-backed vinyl bucket seats, a center console with Slap-Stik shifter, the
Rallye instrument cluster, the A01 Light Group and an AM radio. Other exterior
touches are rocker, drip rail and wheel-well moldings, and the Shaker scoop’s
“hemi’cuda” chrome lettering. While various optional wheels could be had that
year, this car comes with matched black-painted steel wheels, small-diameter
chrome Plymouth Division hubcaps and all-business Goodyear Polyglas GT F60-15
tires. While it’s not in Sassy Grass or Curious Yellow, this is an exclusive
opportunity to own a 1970 Hemi Cuda with unique color optioning and special
curbside appeal.
