A three-year
restoration has returned this 1966 Shelby GT350H to its original condition as
originally delivered to Hertz Rent-a-Car. This Shelby is one of 1,000 produced
by Shelby American specifically for Hertz; these cars were sold to the general
public when their duty as rental cars was completed. According to its listing
in the Shelby Registry, SFM6S1553 was delivered to Hertz through Horne-Williams
Motor Company in Dallas on April 4, 1966. Painted in the Hertz corporate colors
of black with gold stripes, the GT350H is still equipped with much of its
original equipment, including a matching-numbers 289 High Performance “Cobra”
engine, carburetor, fuel pump and body panels. All nuts, bolts and fasteners
are refinished originals or NOS. Like most Hertz Shelbys, it is optioned with
the automatic transmission. The Hertz Shelby is one of the more interesting
sidebars in American muscle car history. The Shelby GT350 was only in its
second year of production when Shelby American sales manager Peyton Kramer
approached Hertz with the idea of adding high-performance Shelby Mustangs to
its rental fleet for the Hertz Sports Car Club. Hoping to sell 100 or so,
Shelby American was pleasantly surprised when the eventual order nearly doubled
1966 Shelby production. This 1966 Hertz Shelby was built at Shelby American’s
Los Angeles facility with all the special GT350 equipment—fiberglass hood with
scoop, rear quarter panel brake-cooling scoops, chrome Magnum 500 wheels,
Plexiglass C-pillar windows, wood steering wheel, competition seat belts and a
dash-mounted tachometer. Shelby also enhanced handling with Koni shocks and
traction bars, plus an export brace and Monte Carlo bar in the engine
compartment to strengthen the front end. Power was supplied by the solid-lifter
289 High Performance with Shelby American’s 306 HP Cobra modifications:
aluminum intake topped by an Autolite 4-barrel carburetor for automatics, Cobra
finned aluminum valve covers and Tri-Y headers.
