The Packard Twelve Fifteenth
Series marked a new era that began in September 1936 when company literature
enthusiastically proclaimed, “the new models include Packard Safety Plus bodies
of hardwood and steel, new Double Trussed frames which are 400 percent more
rigid than before, the exclusive Safe-T-flex independent front wheel
suspension, built-in trunks and Servo Sealed hydraulic brakes.” With a
company-wide downsizing on the horizon, 1937 was the final year for the Senior
144-inch long-wheelbase Twelve, which also benefited from the return to
disc-type steel wheels and the elimination of the aged Bijur central-chassis
lubrication system. Loyal Packard customers rewarded these wide-ranging
innovations, doubling sales from 682 for the Fourteenth Series to 1,300 for the
Fifteenth. Widely considered to be the most majestic of the Fifteenth Series
Twelves, and among the finest of any series, this 1937 Packard 1508 Convertible
Sedan was the largest and costliest of that year’s production-bodied models.
Powered by Packard’s legendary 473/175 HP L-head 12-cylinder engine in concert
with a 3-speed manual transmission, this 1508 was comprehensively restored by
noted Packard expert Ray Belsito, who is renowned for his award-winning work on
a variety of CCCA Full Classic automobiles. Correctly finished in beautiful
Buckingham Gray and sporting a pristine interior featuring snappy red leather
upholstery and opulent wood-grain accents, this magnificent automobile is
superbly finished throughout, presenting in excellent overall condition with a
wide array of the most desirable optional accessories that includes a correct
radio and heater, covered side-mount spares with mirrors, dual driving lights,
a painted rear-mounted luggage rack with an original Packard metal trunk and
the famous swan hood mascot. A well-fitting and fresh looking folding beige
soft top and wide whitewall tires on chrome-trimmed painted steel wheels add another
measure of grandeur to this regal Packard Twelve, which is ready to occupy an
honored place in any collection.
