This 1969 Chevrolet Camaro Z28
is practically every Camaro fan’s unrealized dream, an unrestored, pristine,
low-mileage example that retains high originality, most importantly its
matching-numbers 302/290 HP small-block V-8 engine. The Z28 was created for the
sole purpose of winning the SCCA’s new Trans Am Championship for cars under 305
CI. Because the smallest Camaro V-8 was the 327, Chevrolet Racing Manager Vince
Piggins took a page from every Chevrolet rodder’s handbook; he had a 283-spec
crankshaft installed in a 327 block. The resulting short stroke reduced piston
speed, allowing for higher peak RPM, and held displacement to 302 CI. The rest
followed a well-established formula: a forged rotating assembly, a solid-lifter
cam actuating oversized valves in high-flow heads, and a cowl-induction-fed
Holley 4-barrel on a voluminous dual-plane aluminum intake manifold. The 302
was the main ingredient in a comprehensive package that included special
heavy-duty suspension, quick steering, heavy-duty cooling, dual exhaust, a
sturdy 4-speed and a 12-bolt rear end to handle the 302’s output. It was dubbed
RPO Z28, and Chevrolet General Manager Pete Estes gave it his blessing after
Piggins demonstrated its charms on the way to an executive lunch. Roger
Penske’s Sunoco-sponsored Z28 won the Trans Am Championship for the second time
when this 1969 Z28 first hit the streets, forever associating the Z28 with
dominance on both road and track. Finished in attractive Rallye Green paint and
contrasting white stripes, its matching-numbers 302/290 HP V-8 incorporates a
Winters aluminum intake manifold and Holley 4-barrel carburetor, and it further
benefits from tube headers and dual exhaust. Adding to the Z28’s standard
4-speed, front disc brakes, rear bumper guards and Goodyear Wide Tread GT tires
on Rally wheels are optional power steering, front and rear spoilers, a center
console with U17 Special Instruments, tachometer and a pushbutton AM radio. A
well-cared-for example, it easily qualifies as among the most desirable of the
unrestored 1969 vintage.
