The introduced in late 1937, La Salle's new Model 38-50 was a Cadillac in almost every respect other than its name. Built by Cadillac's Fisher Body plant in Detroit, the four-door 38-50 Convertible Sedan utilized a 124-inch wheelbase frame, and its rear doors were rear-hinged. Two comfortable bench seats were fitted, and the folding canvas top retracted neatly behind the rear of the cabin. The 38-50 was powered by the same under-square 322-cubic inch cast-iron flathead Monobloc V8 as its Cadillac sibling, delivering 125 horsepower through a single dry-plate clutch to a three-speed transmission with column shift. Brakes were hydraulic drums all around. The hood was of a one-piece, alligator style, opening from the front. The 38-50 featured large bullet-shaped headlights, along with running boards, and the massive cast egg-crate radiator grille carried a V8 insignia. The two spare tires and wheels were semi-recessed in the front fenders, hidden by locking steel covers. Running boards eased access to the seats. A large plastic steering wheel faced the driver, who viewed a 110 mph speedometer and odometer, with smaller instruments displaying fuel level, oil pressure, water temperature, and charging. Of the 15,501 Series 38-50 LaSalles built in 1938, only 265 were Convertible Sedans, as these were the most costly model in the line with a base price of $1820.
This LaSalle Convertible Sedan is finished in a handsome Metallic Dark green, with a color-coordinated interior and a tan canvas top. The steel disc wheels are cream, with chromed trim rings and center caps, shod with BF Goodrich wide-white sidewall bias-ply tires. Acquired by the seller in 2021, it was described at the time as having been refurbished about 10 years prior. Electric turn signals have been added. It is equipped with a heater and auxiliary driving lamps. It was reportedly serviced in 2021 with fresh fluids and a fuel system cleaning.
