Ferrari’s latest sensation is the all-new 296 GTB, the first Ferrari-badged production car with a V-6 engine and Ferrari’s first rear-wheel drive hybrid. The new twin-turbocharged, twin-intercooled 3.0L 120-degree V-6 engine, which employs “Hot-Vee” architecture positioning the exhausts within the V and intakes on the outside, would provide plenty of power on its own—654 HP, to be exact—to propel this track-focused projectile to exhilarating speeds. Add Ferrari’s MGU-K plug-in hybrid system, complemented with the 7.5-kWh battery pack located under the floor, and the number climbs to a combined 819 HP, enough to produce blinding acceleration, as in 0-60 MPH in 2.5 seconds with 100 MPH arriving in 4.8 seconds. Driving through an 8-speed, paddle-shifted, dual-clutch automatic transmission, the V-6 reaches a peak of 8,500 RPM, adding Ferrari’s signature exhaust shriek to an already bliss-inducing sensory experience.
Driven just 279 miles, the 2023 example offered here showcases the 296 GTB’s many charms. The form emulates that of the 1963 250 LM, especially in the flowing roofline, the cooling inlets aft of the doors and the large central exhaust outlet. An Enzo-inspired, speed-sensitive rear spoiler and carbon fiber rear diffuser provide maximum downforce at speed, while Brembo carbon-ceramic disc brakes with 15.7-inch front and 14.2-inch rear rotors and yellow calipers balance the hybrid performance with excellent stopping power. Four driving modes—eDrive, Hybrid, Performance and Qualify—provide increasing levels of performance activated through the steering wheel-mounted Manettino and aided by input from the side-slip control system.
Finished in Rosso Corsa with Scuderia shields, this 296 GTB further recalls the classic 250 LM with the Argento Nürburgring stripe that runs its full length and wraps around both the nose and tail. That feature is the most visible element of the supplementary Assetto Fiorano package, a $41,956 option that adds further to the 296 GTB’s mind-blowing performance with adjustable Multimatic shock absorbers, high downforce carbon-fiber exterior trim and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires on diamond-cut five-spoke alloy wheels. An ultralight Lexan rear screen and additional carbon fiber trim weight even further.
Extensive use of carbon fiber is also featured inside, along with a broad array of touch-sensitive controls, full instrumentation and full Alcantara racing seats. Boasting over $150,000 in optional extras and the most performance of any production RWD car in Ferrari history, this 296 GTB Assetto Fiorano is as stunning and exciting an automobile as any that have ever worn the symbol of the Prancing Horse.
