1 of 1,949 LT1
Corvettes produced in 1971
The recipient
of a wide-ranging body-off restoration, this handsome, low-mileage 1971
Chevrolet Corvette LT1 Coupe is one of 1,949 LT1 Corvettes produced in that
second year of availability. Breaking with tradition after 10 years, in
mid-1965, the solid-lifter small-block engine disappeared from the Corvette
engine roster to make way for the new generation of big-block V-8s, leaving the
hydraulic-cam L79 327/350 HP engine the only optional small-block until the
1969 350/350 HP version. The solid-lifter small-block drought lasted until
1970, when it finally returned, like a beloved old friend, in the form of the
LT1. This was the high-revving solid-lifter small-block as Corvette fans had
come to know and love, a lightweight powerhouse whose throaty exhaust note and
clattering lifters could set any Corvette lover’s heart beating in cadence. Its
4-bolt main cap block, forged-steel crank and rods and forged impact-extruded
alloy-aluminum pistons constituted its bulletproof bottom end, and its
high-lift, high-duration cam actuated large-diameter valves in free-flowing
heads. In contrast to the lesser small-blocks, the LT1 inhaled through a
high-flow 850 CFM Holley 4-barrel carburetor with vacuum secondaries atop a
dual-plane aluminum intake manifold and exhaled through ram’s-horn exhaust
manifolds and the same 2.5-inch exhaust pipes found in big-block Corvettes. A
large aluminum radiator and high-volume fuel and oil pumps were used, the latter
inside a special baffled oil pan. Rated at 330 HP in 1971, the matching-numbers
LT1 in this Nevada Silver example is backed by a Muncie M21 close-ratio 4-speed
and a 3.36:1 Positraction third member. Retaining the original frame, birdcage,
body panels, chrome and stainless, this fine example shows just 30,480 miles
and is nicely equipped with power steering and brakes, a black leather
interior, tinted glass, custom shoulder belts, removable T-top roof panels,
pop-out rear window and an AM/FM radio.
