This 1960 Chevrolet Corvette
is one of just 759 equipped with the RPO 579D 283 CI engine featuring Rochester
Ramjet mechanical fuel injection and rated at 290 HP at 6,200 RPM. While the
top-rated 283/290 HP Fuelie engine was in its third year of production,
budget restrictions put an end to Corvette Engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov’s plan to
continue development of the SS racer and a corresponding new production
high-performance package. Instead, he turned his attention to giving Corvette
buyers “as much of both worlds as we could … to combine in one automobile the
comfort of a tourer and the ability of a racer.” The first production Corvette
to reflect this approach, the 1960 model benefited from significant suspension
revisions designed to improve both handling and overall ride characteristics.
To that end, Arkus-Duntov installed a thicker front sway bar balanced by a rear
sway bar, the latter being the first one used in a production automobile.
Combined with slightly softer springs and recalibrated shock absorbers, this
new arrangement made the 1960 model the best-handling production Corvette ever.
Built in May 1960, this factory fuel-injected convertible is equipped with a
matching-numbers 283/290 HP engine and BorgWarner 4-speed manual transmission,
290 HP-specific code 7017320 Rochester fuel-injection unit, code-correct
generator and distributor, and finned aluminum valve covers. A 4.11
Positraction differential completes the car’s racy powertrain. Joining those
high-performance assets is an equally dramatic color scheme comprising bright
Roman Red paint with a matching red vinyl interior, an iconic pairing
complemented with white side coves and Coker Classic wide whitewall tires on
red-painted factory 15-inch wheels with full-size spinner wheel covers. This
iconic Fuelie features a new convertible top, a full tonneau cover,
factory gauge package and a Wonderbar AM radio.
