When it comes to full-size
splendor, few cars have more style and presence than this 1961 Chrysler 300G
hardtop. It’s one of just 1,280 hardtops produced for the 1961 model year. The
1961 models are distinguished by their fins, made famous by
Chrysler’s “Forward Look," which were in their final year of
production. For 1962, the rear end was radically restyled, and gone were
its signature styling element. This car, part of a Washington state collection
for the past 20 years, has everything expected from Chrysler’s halo
performance car. The heart of the 300G was its 10.1:1 high-compression 413
CI RB wedge-head V-8 dominated by its exclusive 30-inch ram-tube
induction system on which were perched twin 4-barrel Carter AFB
carburetors, combining to produce 375 HP. This car is also equipped
with Chrysler’s legendary TorqueFlite 3-speed pushbutton automatic
transmission, giving it transcontinental cruising capabilities that took
advantage of America’s then rapidly expanding Interstate Highway System.
Throughout the years, many enthusiasts have debated which cars could be worthy
of the “gentleman’s muscle car” title, but the Chrysler 300G truly deserved it.
Nowhere was this more evident than in its luxurious interior, a
well-trimmed affair with leather-trimmed bucket seats that swivel out for ease-of-entry
up front and individual seats in the rear, all split by a full-length center
console with each row featuring its own center armrest. And the
Jetson-like AstroDome instrument cluster, featuring electro-luminescent
illumination, remains to this day a styling tour de force. Any Chrysler
letter car is special, but few as much as the stylish 1961 models. With their
massive road presence, the canted quad front headlights, fins that
defined the era, the ram-tuned 413 and well-appointed interiors, the 1961
Chrysler 300s were the style icons of their era. This is an
especially well-presented example with its red exterior and
contrasting tan leather interior, and it is certain to be a welcome
addition for any collector of full-sized American performance.
