The 1972 DeTomaso Pantera is held in high esteem for its graceful
integration of an exotic Italian body design mated with a reliable and powerful
American drivetrain. Introduced to the American audience at the New York Auto
Show in 1970, the Pantera was sold through the Lincoln-Mercury dealership
network from 1971-75. The gorgeous body style was entrusted to the Italian
design firm Ghia and penned by a young American-born Tom Tjaarda—who often
referred to the Pantera as the greatest design achievement of his career. Built
under the guidance of Alejandro DeTomaso, the cars were assembled in Modena,
Italy—the epicenter of Italian automotive artistry. The basic architecture of
the Pantera was that of a longitudinal rear midengine layout. The chosen engine
was the Ford 351 Cleveland, a stout powerplant admired for its 4-bolt
main-bearing caps and large valves with a proven reputation of performance and
reliability. The 5-speed transaxle—the same used in the Maserati Bora—was
sourced from the German manufacturer ZF. Only 5,500 Panteras were exported for
sale in the U.S. Realizing that America was its most lucrative market, DeTomaso
specified a key list of standard equipment for the Pantera that included air
conditioning, power-assisted 4-wheel disc brakes, power-assisted
rack-and-pinion steering and electric windows. The Pantera was a very fast
car—especially considering it was 1972—and “Car & Driver” magazine
confirmed that by recording a 0-60 MPH time of 5.5 seconds. These were
respectable sports cars with a compliant ride quality and air conditioning.
This gorgeous red 1972 DeTomaso Pantera has been recently serviced by marque
specialist Pantera Miami and upgraded to GT5-S specification. It has been
tastefully upgraded with an electronic fuel-injection system, 17-inch polished
Campagnolo wheels that mimic the same center design as the originals, enhanced
air conditioning, HID headlights and sequential LED tail lights.
